The Teacher Education Department at Adrian College empowers competent, caring, creative, and committed future educators and strives to provide the best preparation for teacher candidates interested in teaching at the elementary, secondary, and K-12 levels.

Prospective teacher candidates are able to select from Elementary Education (grades PK-3, 3-6), Secondary Education (grades 7-12), or K-12 Education. All programs within Teacher Education are approved by the Michigan Department of Education. Teacher Education at Adrian College is accredited through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Completion of all program requirements leads to initial teacher certification from the State of Michigan, which is transferable to most other states, although some additional requirements may be necessary.

  • Elementary Education candidates will be prepared to teach all subjects in both PK-3 and 3-6.
  • Secondary Majors/Minors include: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies (Comprehensive), History, Chemistry (minor only), Biology, Physics (minor only), and Spanish.
  • K-12 Majors include: Health/Physical Education, Visual Arts, Music, and Spanish.
  • Early Childhood Development is available as a major/minor (does not lead to teacher certification).

All Teacher Education programs are designed to allow candidates to complete required coursework in their area of study along with completing required clinical experiences in classrooms across Lenawee County working with qualified mentor teachers. The professional internship semester (Associate Teaching) is completed at the end of the program again working with qualified mentor teachers and college supervisors. Candidates are supported throughout their program with Teacher Education Faculty academic advisors and a dedicated Placement Coordinator and Certification Officer. The Education Curriculum Center (ECC) in Valade Hall offers resources that may be used in planning, teaching and assessing lessons in clinical experiences.
