Derrick Diggs ’77

Derrick Diggs ’77, chief of the Fort Myers Police Department since 2016, died February 15, 2023. He had been on a medical leave of absence since July, but was planning on returning to work in April. Derrick had worked in law enforcement for more than four decades and spent 37 years with the Toledo Police Department, including two years as chief. He was the first African-American to serve the Toledo department in that role. Derrick earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Toledo. Survivors include one son, three grandsons and a sister.
