Dr. Jennifer Towns has over 15 years working in the social work field, providing clinical treatment in a variety of settings, including: hospitals, community mental health departments, and private practice. Her work as a therapist incorporates multiple evidence-based practice modalities, including: EMDR, Internal Family Systems, mind-body/somatic components, Dialectical Behavioral components, and solution-focused therapy – all primarily to treat complex interpersonal trauma and trauma related to minority stress/status. Dr. Towns has been teaching in higher education for 9 years at both a BSW and MSW level, and teaches courses on Policy, Diversity, Theory, Professional Documentation/Grant Writing, Research, and Trauma. Her research focuses on trauma-informed care and the impact of trauma on adult functioning - especially in first-generation college students or among the LGBTQIA+ population. She is also a member of many workgroups that focus on advancing equality and social justice through education, therapy, and political action.
