Statement to the Community

Adrian College mourns the passing of Stanley Caine, who served as the 16th President of Adrian College from 1989 to 2005 and provided dedicated leadership during a significant period in the College’s history.

During his presidency, President Caine guided Adrian College through a period of significant transition in American higher education marked by shifting demographics, rising costs, and increased competition, with a strong commitment to academic excellence, student development, and responsible stewardship of the College’s resources. Among his notable contributions were construction of the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center, expansion of the Shipman Library, and transforming the former Ridge Gymnasium into what is now the Caine Student Center, renamed in his honor following his presidency. Each of these projects helped strengthen the foundation of the institution.

President Caine was widely respected for his principled leadership, collaborative approach, and for his belief in the transformative power of a liberal arts education. His service reflected a deep dedication to the mission and values of Adrian College and to the students, faculty, and staff who bring that mission to life.
