Adrian College is proud to announce the launch of two groundbreaking degree programs in High-Performance Coaching and Operations: a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts. These innovative programs aim to elevate the coaching profession and meet the growing demand for highly skilled, well-prepared coaching professionals.

“I have felt the wonderful influence of a good coach and the profound negative impact of a bad one,” said Dr. Tina Claiborne, Professor and Director of Athletic Training at Adrian College. “Imagine if every athlete, at every level, had a coach who was equipped with advanced performance strategies, strong leadership, and the science to back up their decisions. That future starts now.”

The field of coaching has evolved dramatically in recent years. No longer centered solely on fitness and motivation, today's coaches must also master performance analytics, sports science, and operations strategy. Yet despite its complexity, coaching has not always been taken seriously by higher education institutions, until now.

"There are 42,000 projected coaching and scouting job openings every year for the next decade,” said Claiborne. “Our new program responds directly to industry needs while adding legitimacy and credibility to a career that profoundly shapes lives.”

The idea for the program came from Phil Osaer, former head of Goaltending Scouting and Player Development for the Detroit Red Wings (2019-2025), and newly named Director of Athlete Development at Suburban Sports Group. In addition to his work with the Red Wings, Osaer brings over two decades of high-level experience as a player, scout and leader with USA Hockey, Michigan State University, and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Osaer will serve as a key architect, advisor, and mentor to all students in the program.

“It is my great pleasure to be part of this program, designed specifically for those who aspire to coach high-level sports teams,” said Osaer. “I’ve coached at nearly every level and know how valuable a structured, hands-on education can be. This curriculum is built to reflect what it actually takes, day in and day out, to be a high-level coach, scout, or manager.”

These programs are tailored for both undergraduate students seeking an initial degree, and graduate students interested in advancing their coaching careers. Students in the program will be immersed in real-world, application-driven experiences, with coursework and sport specific internships focused on:

  • Sports Science & Performance Analytics
  • Mental Performance & Leadership Development
  • Strength & Conditioning
  • Nutrition & Sleep Optimization
  • Business & Operations Strategy

Osaer has already developed partnerships with sports organizations and national governing bodies to secure internship and practicum opportunities. Students will also be able to earn professional coaching certifications while building an elite network of industry contacts.

“This major isn’t just about earning a degree, it’s about producing impactful professionals,” said Osaer. “We’re building the next generation of leaders who will bring integrity, innovation, and excellence to sports at all levels.”

The Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in High-Performance Coaching and Operations are now open for enrollment for the Fall 2025 semester (www.adrian.edu). Here are some other programs available in the Department of Exercise Science & Athletic Training.
