Sport Management goes to National Championships

Posted Friday, August 19, 2022

On January 10, 2022, Sport Management graduate students had the opportunity to attend the College Football National Championships in Indianapolis, IN. It took many months of planning between Charles Reid, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Accountancy, Business, and Economics; Keith Christy, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Accountancy, Business, and Economics; and the Sport Management Society e-board to set up this event for students. “Providing this kind of opportunity for both graduate and undergraduate students is something we believe is pivotal for the students and one of the many benefits of attending Adrian College,” Dr. Reid said.

During their time at the event, students gained valuable experiences and insight into a career in Sport Management that can’t be replicated in the classroom.

P’hariz Watkins, a graduate student in the Sport Management program, describes his experience: “During this event, my job consisted of being a concierge and making sure all of the fans were provided with the information that they needed prior to game day and game time. In addition, I provided fan engagement on game day, leading all the way up to the kick off.”

Attending professional development opportunities like the national championships provides students with experience related to a career in sport management and the chance to meet other students who have similar professional interests. P’hariz shares, “The most valuable experience that I had while being a part of this event was the opportunity to meet and network with other students and sport management professionals while gaining knowledge and connecting with other students who are in the same position I am. Also, I appreciated getting the privilege to soak in knowledge and introduce myself to sports operation professionals who are in the positions I want to be in.”

Dr. Reid explains that students learned about organizing and leadership, gained valuable experience in understanding the customer experience aspect of sporting events, and took away a sense of belonging. “Given that Adrian College serves a population who often consists of first-generation college students, participation in an event like this helps show them that it doesn’t matter where you come from. If you’re willing to do the job, and you do it with the right work ethic and perseverance that we instill in our students, you can be a part of the biggest sporting events in the world.”
