Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps invite public to free performance at AC

Posted Friday, June 17, 2022

The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps has been preparing for its competitive season on the campus of Adrian College and is inviting the community to its rehearsal performances on Friday, June 24. The gates to Docking Stadium open at 8:30 p.m. for practice. At 9:30 p.m., the group will feature a full dress rehearsal in uniform, followed by a musical encore. This event is free and open to the public.

The Cavaliers 2022 production is titled, “Signs of the Times.” The show is designed to take audiences on a journey from the early days of the printing press, to the modern age of social media, all the while showing how time is endless and repeats itself in mystifying ways. Musical repertoire includes music of old and new; from Johann Sebastian Bach to Steve Miller Band to Harry Styles.

Since May 26, residents of Adrian have been hearing the sounds of brass and percussion music traveling through the streets from Docking Stadium. Driving through the college campus, one could spot large groups of young men spinning flags in unison, playing loud brass horns, or hitting drums in an arc formation.

The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps has practiced several hours a day outside rehearsing their 2022 production in preparation for a competitive summer tour across the US. Their convoy includes 150 performing musicians and color guard members, 60 staff and volunteers, two semitrucks full of instruments and equipment, and a third truck outfitted with a full kitchen.

The group is a world-class competing drum and bugle corps, affiliated with Drum Corps International. The membership is all male, consisting of talented 16-to-22-year-old musicians and dancers from across the country.

Hundreds of young men audition to be a Cavalier in November, and those who make the cut rehearse together monthly. The performers move in together in late May to learn and practice a 12-minute field show. In late June, the corps set off for tour, performing and rehearsing in large football stadiums across the country, beginning with Ford Field on June 28. The season culminates at the DCI World Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday, August 13. Since 1992, the Cavaliers have won the World Championship title seven times.
