Adrian College’s first-ever COVID-19 Vaccination Day went “very smoothly,” according to its Student Health Center Director, Emily Kist, who reported that 150 shots were given to students, staff and faculty in the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center on Wednesday, April 14.

“Great work all the way around from our student volunteers, Rite Aid, and our first response team from the Adrian Fire Department,” Kist said.

Cassidy Hampton, a second year Adrian College student majoring in biology and environmental science, received a vaccination shot and said she was glad to “get it over with.”

“It didn’t hurt at all, and it was really quick!” Hampton said.

The next second dose of the Moderna vaccine will be given to the participants on May 12 in the same location.

It is believed to be the first time in Adrian College’s history, since 1859, that a vaccination day was held on campus.

In A. Douglas MacNaughton’s book, “A History of Adrian College,” it notes that Adrian College had two cases of scarlet fever reported on campus in 1917, but no further cases developed. The book also mentions that several people in Lenawee County died each week from the influenza epidemic and some cases of smallpox in the summer, fall and winter of 1918-19. MacNaughton wrote, “The Adrian public schools were closed part of the time and some public events were cancelled. The college, however, remained open.”
