Due to the State of Michigan’s ongoing COVID-19 restrictions on group gatherings, Adrian College has postponed its upcoming winter commencement and rescheduled the event for May 1. The college decided to include the Class of 2020 in the May 1 ceremony, which had its spring commencement postponed twice this year. Adrian College’s Class of 2021 will receive degrees the following day, during a May 2 spring commencement.

“With COVID-19 numbers increasing in the state and across the country, we don’t expect the group gathering restrictions to be reduced in time to host our winter commencement,” Adrian College President Jeffrey Docking said. “We don’t want to do a simple drive-through type of ceremony and thought it best to push the commencement to May 1st and have a combined celebration on campus with the Class of 2020. We’re hoping to provide a memorable experience for these deserving students who’ve gone through so much turmoil this year.”

Commencement day events will be similar to those in the past with tentative plans in place for programs and photographs of the students receiving their certificates. Adrian College will follow any restrictions in place at the time for guest seating, the procession and recession, the Cane Ceremony and the after party on the Caine Student Center terrace.

President Docking will address students as the commencement speaker on both days.

The ceremonies will be held on Commencement Plaza unless inclement weather forces them to be relocated indoors. The Merillat Sport and Fitness Center’s Blue Gym has been reserved as an alternate location.
