MIAA postpones fall season, Adrian College plans to play

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Presidents’ Council has announced that fall sports will be postponed until spring. Adrian College is still planning to play an athletic schedule in all of its fall sports programs including bass fishing, bowling, competitive cheerleading, cross-country, equestrian, football, golf, tennis, rowing, soccer and volleyball.

In light of the MIAA’s announcement, Adrian College athletics has initiated the process of developing independent schedules for fall sports. Michael Duffy, Adrian College’s athletic director, is working to identify interested colleges.

“We’ve reached out to other institutions who are also looking to engage in competition this fall,” Duffy said. “More information will come on these modified schedules as it is available.”

Adrian College’s COVID-19 task force has been working for several months creating its preparedness plan, which is posted on the College website. Adrian College will follow the NCAA recommendations outlined in the “Resocialization of Collegiate Sport: Developing Standards for Practice and Competition” document.

Adrian College President, Jeffrey Docking, said his primary goal is the safety of students and the campus community, as well as preserving as much of a normal college experience as possible.

The 2020-21 academic year will mark the 133rd consecutive year of operation for the NCAA Division III-affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. Adrian College was founded in 1859.
