Adrian College’s (AC) athletic department has announced its 2019-2020 Frank and Shirley Dick Scholar Athletes of the Year. This award is presented annually to a female and a male graduating senior varsity athlete with the highest grade point average over four years and evidence of community service and involvement. This year’s honorees are Caroline Fleming (Grosse Ile, Mich.) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women’s soccer team and Rainer Glimpel (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) D1 men’s hockey team.
“We have been honored to have had these two student athletes represent Adrian College. They are both extremely impressive in the classroom and as leaders of their teams,” said AC Athletic Director Mike Duffy. “I’m also very proud of their commitment to helping others through community service.”
Fleming earned a Bachelor of Science in exercise science and finished with a cumulative grade point average of 3.98. She has logged numerous hours of community service with Special Olympics. She is currently seeking a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training at Adrian College.
Her accomplishments at Adrian College include being named to the to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All American First Team, the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Women’s Soccer Most Valuable Player - First Team All-Conference, a four-time All-American (2019 USC 2nd Team, 2019 USC Scholar 1st Team, 2019 CoSIDA Academic First Team (2018 CoSIDA Academic 3rd Team), a three-time First Team All-MIAA (2017, 2018, 2019), a three-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region (2017, 2018, 2019), a two-time Adrian College ACEES Best Female Athlete (2018, 2019), led MIAA in goals in 2019 (16), game-winning goals (5), assists (14), and points (46), an MIAA Most Valuable Player (2019), scored a game-winning goal in double overtime of first NCAA tournament win in school history, holds the school record for career assists (34), and was one of only three players in school history to reach 100-point plateau.
Fleming recently signed professional soccer contract with Detroit City FC.
She was an Athletic Training “Rising Star” award recipient in 2017, a Chair of Adrian College Special Olympics Soccer program, and a Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) Executive Board member and member of Mortar Board, Alpha Chi and ATSO.
Fleming was also named an Adrian College Outstanding Senior Athlete.
Glimpel earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting and held a cumulative grade point average of 3.96. He served on Adrian College’s SAAC and as the president of the AC student advisory board where he volunteered countless hours.
Glimpel racked up 161 points in 130 games for Adrian College. He helped the Bulldogs win four conference championships, three playoff championships and one national championship, while winning all-conference first team awards. and has a very good chance to be an American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) All-American once those awards are announced.
“He is the most dedicated, honest and hardworking young man I have had the pleasure to coach in the four years I have been at Adrian College,” said Gary Astalos, the ACHA D1 men’s coach. “In regards to team events he has volunteered with feeding the less fortunate at the soup kitchen, playing soccer with Special Olympics, and so much more.”
Glimpel has received interest from Single-A professional hockey leagues, however, he has chosen to go directly into the business world.
The awards will be presented during Adrian College’s homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 3.
