The Eighth Annual Sweetheart Prom will be held at Adrian College in the Adrian Tobias Center, beginning at 7 p.m., March 21. The event is coordinated through PRIDE (Promoting the Rights of Individuals with Disabilities Everywhere), an Adrian College student organization.
All proceeds from the event will support the HOPE (Helping Others through Projects and Experiences) Community Center in Adrian. The Center has been a haven for adults with disabilities since 1976.
The Sweetheart Prom will feature music, dancing, snacks and drinks. The event is open to everyone of all ages. Formal attire is requested. The cost is $10 per person or $15 per couple. Student tickets are discounted at $5 each. There is no charge for HOPE Community Center members. Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance by contacting PRIDE group advisor Amanda McGovern at amcgovern@adrian.edu or 265.5161, ext. 4093.
“This event helps us so much. With us having no state or federal funding, we rely on our community,” HOPE’s Executive Director, Fallon Bull, said. “It helps us out significantly, financially. Any money coming in really helps.”
She said the event also brings awareness to the community about HOPE’s mission, in addition to the funding generated for day-to-day operations. Bull is very thankful Adrian College’s PRIDE group takes care of all of the arrangements for the special evening.
“It provides an outlet for our members to have a social experience, to do things that we all take for granted. They deserve the same opportunities,” Bull said. “That’s huge, in and of itself, that this disability population is getting to experience these things.”
Aaron Helber, from Throw Your Hands Up Entertainment is setting up a photo booth, free of charge, while Justin Manchester from J-Man’s Live DJ Service will provide the music.
“The students involved in Promoting the Rights for Individuals with Disabilities Everywhere, who have worked so hard on developing this inclusive prom, and I, are excited to invite anyone who wants to come to a night filled with fun, dancing, snacks and more,” McGovern, said.
