Adrian College recently hired Emily (Turkowski) Kist as its new director of the Student Health Center. As the director, Kist is responsible for the operation and coordination of direct health care and health education at Adrian College.

Kist graduated with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner, from the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., in April. She received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Mary in 2014.

Kist was recently married and is currently living in Toledo, Ohio, with her husband, Tylar.

“I am thrilled to be here,” Kist said of joining Adrian College. “I am so excited. I think the facility has a lot of potential for some pretty big things. We’re moving into more mental health initiatives and seeing students for their mental health needs. As a family nurse practitioner, I want to keep our students healthy, so we’re providing a lot of education on wellness, overall well-being, and just helping students make responsible health care decisions and health choices.”

Kist was with the Internal Medicine & Family Practice in Joliet, Ill., from January to April and completed 280 clinical hours in family practice. She also completed 90 clinical hours in January at Sanford Inpatient and Outpatient Behavioral Health in Bismarck, N.D. In all, she has accumulated 1,086 clinical hours since August 2016.

Her credentials include membership in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and certifications in American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course, and Foundations and Application of Formal Precepting.

Kist worked as a charge nurse at the Timberline Knolls Treatment Center in Lemont, Ill., from February to November of 2018 and was a registered nurse for Inpatient Adult and Geriatric Behavioral Health at the Sparrow Medical Center in Lansing from January 2016 to December 2017. Prior to that, Kist was a charge nurse for Inpatient Adult and Pediatric Behavioral Health at the Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, N.D., from July 2014 to December 2015.

Kist’s weekly schedule fills up quickly so she recommends setting up appointments in advance if possible.

“I am encouraging students to make appointments with me, but, of course, I take walk-ins as I can,” Kist said. “As a nurse practitioner, I can assess, diagnose and treat. It’s very convenient for the students.”
