Completing Your Program of Study

F-1 students have several options as they approach the end of their program at Adrian College. Other than ensuring they have met with the Registrar’s Office for a degree audit and applied for graduation, international students can:

1. Apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT)

F-1 students should begin the OPT application process in the first month of their last semester. Students should contact their DSO to begin the process.

2. Apply for a change of status (if applicable)

USCIS must receive the application before the end of the 60-day grace period if an F-1 student is applying for a change of status after completing their program. However, it is recommended to submit the application and have it adjudicated by USCIS prior to the end of the 60-day grace period.

3. Start a new program of study at Adrian College

F-1 students must be fully admitted and have received a new I-20 for the new program from their DSO prior to the end of their 60-day grace period. Updated financial information is required.

4. Transfer to a new school for a new program of study

F-1 students must request their SEVIS record be transferred out to the new school prior to the end of their 60-day grace period.

5. Leave the U.S. before the grace period ends

Important Information to Note

  • The program completion date is the last day of final exams during the semester in which F-1 students complete their degree requirements.
  • On-campus work eligibility ends upon program completion.
  • If an F-1 student plans to travel outside of the U.S. during their grace period, they will not be able to re-enter the U.S. as an F-1 student. They may, however, be able to re-enter the U.S. as a tourist (though this is not recommended).
