Organic Laboratory II
This laboratory course is Web CT-based
Instructor: Dr. Maher Mualla
Text: Macroscale and Microscale Organic Experiments by K. L. Williamson; Third Edition, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1999.
Course Objectives:
1. To apply the skills, techniques, and knowledge acquired during the fall
semester to identify unknowns and prepare compounds.
2. To learn the process of identifying organic compounds using spectroscopic
methods.
3. To develop familiarity with computer software relevant to organic chemistry.
Laboratory Reports:
A well-written laboratory report is required for each experiment. The report
should be submitted on-line (Web CT).
Out of Lab Work:
In addition to laboratory work, each student will be assigned two computer-simulated
unknowns, two unknowns to be identified by spectroscopic methods and a computer
modeling exercise.
Attendance:
Attendance is required. Missing THREE laboratory periods will result in an
F grade in the course.
Grading Scale:
Lab reports 50%
Computer simulated unknowns 10%
Spectroscopic identification unknowns 20%
Computer modeling exercise 5%
Final exam 10%
Attendance and evaluation 5%
