LOFT CONSTRUCTION POLICY
1) Purpose of the Policy:
a) Lofts are permitted in residence hall rooms and assist
in providing increased space, individual expression
and an atmosphere conducive to rest and study. The following
guidelines are provided for construction of lofts. Violations
of these guidelines may result in the dismantling of
the loft.
2) General Conditions:
a) Size of loft: Lofts are permitted to occupy up to
50 percent of the floor space in any room. Closet area
will be included when calculating the floor space.
b) Height of loft: The top surface of the loft platform
shall be at least 30 inches from the ceiling.
c) Proximity to windows: No loft shall obstruct any
window. Windows must be operable all times and must
be usable as a means of exit.
d) Proximity to doors: No loft shall obstruct the doors
of the room at any time. The door must be fully operable
at all times and must be usable as a means of exit or
entry to the room.
e) Damage to Rooms: Lofts must be constructed so as
to be free standing without attachment to any furniture
or wall, molding or any part of the room. Lofts may,
however, be wedged with padded material against a wall
to prevent wobble. They must be able to be removed from
the room without damage to any part of the room or its
furnishings. Residents of the room are responsible for
any damage caused by the construction, installation,
use or removal of a loft.
f) Electrical Safety: Lofts must not cover or stand
within six inches of any electrical outlet or fixture.
g) Fire Safety: Tree limbs and rough sawn wood are prohibited..
h) Decorative Materials: Flammable decorative materials
such as fishnets, curtains, paper products, posters,
etc., are not to be attached to the loft. Carpeting,
foam, and other such material may be used for padding.
i) Enclosing the loft: Lofts shall not be enclosed in
any way.
j) Removal and Storage of Lofts: Lofts shall be removed
from the room at the end of the school year. Storage
is not provided during the summer.
k) Attachments/Use: The loft may not have any playground
equipment or other equipment attached such as slides,
swings, hammocks, etc. Lofts are for beds only; platforms
for chairs, couches, etc. are not permitted.
3) Construction Standards
a) Lumber must be kiln dried and seasoned and treated
with fire retardant paint. "Green" lumber
is not permitted.
b) Bolts, lock washers, and nuts provide the greatest
strength and facilitate removal. Nonstructural parts
may be fastened with screws.
c) The loft must be sturdy. Building the loft to the
wall and inserting padded wedges can eliminate any wobbling.
In wedging, care must be taken so as not to damage the
wall.
The College does not provide any services for construction,
sale, or disposal of lofts. Supplies for building a
