Frequently Asked Questions (Upperclassman)

Do I still have to live on campus if I am a 5th year senior?
No, there is only a four year live-on requirement.

What if I am a commuter? Do I have to live on campus?
No, the commuter policy is not changing.

What if I already live off-campus? Will I have to move back on?
No, students who already live off campus may remain off.

What if I have extenuating circumstances? Do I still have to live on campus?
There is a housing committee consisting of administrators, faculty, and students who will be the final say in any appeals to move off campus. Appeal forms can be picked up in the Student Life Office, Caine 223 and must be submitted by March 7, 2007 to be considered for fall semester.

Who will get squatter’s rights?
Students currently living in Deans and Estes halls and in the College View Apartments will have squatter’s rights.

How will the lottery work?
The lottery will consist of all rooms, apartments, and singles not occupied by freshman and squatters. The lottery will be based on class year. Higher demand housing such as College View apartments and Theme Houses will be filled first.

Will there be substance free living for upperclassmen next year?
Yes, there will be substance free living for upperclassmen. A survey will be conducted in January to see how many students would like substance free housing, and then a location will be picked based on availability and need.

I currently live in the quad and am use to a very different environment than north campus? Where should I live? What will it be like?
One option is Cargo hall, which is currently being renovated. The renovations include newly painted and carpeted rooms, computer labs in the building, and a TV room and game room in the basement. The game room will have pool tables, air hockey, ping pong, electronic dart boards, and foosball. There will also be an area with a big screen TV that will not only have regular cable, but several movie and sports channels as well. These areas will be for the use of all residents and registered social events will be permitted. Second floor Cargo will also be co-ed.

What does co-ed mean for Cargo? Aren’t all the halls co-ed?
Most halls are co-ed by floor. Cargo’s second floor main hallway will alternate every other room male, then female.

Is it true that there will be a bowling alley in Cargo?
A bowling alley in Cargo was one of the ideas being looked at. However, a suggestion box was put out in Caine and many students commented that they were opposed to having bowling lanes in the dorms, so that idea will not be carried out.

What’s theme housing?
The Theme Housing Program at Adrian College is intended to provide a unique living/learning experience of exploring an academic area of interest for students. The group of students living in Theme Housing will be self-directed through the use of goal setting, programming, and a theme housing contract. All theme housing will be single sex housing. Applications are available in the Student Life Office, Caine, 223.

What’s happening with Pellowe hall?
Pellowe hall is currently being completely gutted and renovated into 74 single rooms with their own bathroom. The hall will also be air-conditioned, and will have an elevator.

What are in-hall apartments?
Currently each residence hall has an in-hall apartment where the Resident Director (RD) lives. Beginning next fall, north campus will no longer be staffed with RD’s, so those apartments will be available to students. Each apartment has a bedroom, living room, bathroom and kitchen area. These apartments will have two students living in each.

Why were Resident Director and Greek Assistant positions cut for next year? Although the freshman quad will be staffed with one hall director per building, upperclassmen housing will not. This was done to bring the staff student ratio closer to that of our peer schools, and ultimately to give more independence to upperclassmen and Greeks. All upperclassmen buildings will still have 2 to 3 RA staff members.

When will we know the ‘07-‘08 prices for different housing options that will be available?
The prices are set by the Adrian College Board of Trustees at the February 17, 2007 meeting.

If I won’t be able to live in my current room next year in the quad or Jarvis, will I receive any priority over available rooms on campus?
Yes, students in Jarvis and the Quad will be given priority over available residence hall rooms throughout the rest of campus.

What buildings will be handicap accessible for upper-class students?
Cargo will remain a handicap accessible building. Additionally, the newly renovated Pellowe Hall will have six barrier free rooms and an elevator.
