Changes to College Housing
Announced
Theme housing, more singles, and in-hall apartments
all options in 2007-2008 ADRIAN, Mich.
– Adrian College is making several changes to its housing
options in 2007-2008.
The College will now offer theme housing in houses adjacent to campus,
including two homes it recently purchased. Theme housing enables
a group of students to explore common interests or issues while
living together. Examples include houses centered in academic arenas
such as foreign language, pre-med and teacher education.
All campus residents are eligible for theme houses, and are invited
to pick up an application in Student Affairs next semester.
Beginning next fall, a Freshmen Quad will be established. All incoming
students will live together in Davis, Feeman, Stevens and Powell.
This unique living experience is targeted at creating greater opportunities
for bonding and programming for freshmen, and has successfully improved
retention at other cutting-edge colleges.
Another way the College will improve its housing options is by renovating
Pellowe Hall. The structure, which is currently used by Conferences
for housing off-campus guests, will be completely renovated and
updated to include 74 air conditioned single rooms, each with its
own bathroom facility.
Cargo Hall will be renovated, and the second floor will now be co-ed.
In addition, the building will include a fully-equipped recreation
room where students can host registered social events, a movie room,
and possibly a bowling alley.
After listening to concerns from Adrian College Greek women, the
sororities will relocate from Herrick and Lowry to Jarvis Hall.
Each sorority will have its own floor, its own chapter room in the
basement, and will elect a house manager to act as a liaison between
the chapter and Student Affairs.
The College will increase its live-in professional staff from two
to five, and reduce its student staff by eliminating residence director
and Greek assistant positions. Five resident assistant positions
will be added.
These staff changes bring Adrian’s ratio of staff to students
closer to other colleges, and will create more independence for
students living in the residence halls and Greek housing.
Several in-hall apartments formerly occupied by residence directors
will now be available to students. The apartments feature a bedroom,
living room and kitchen.
The College is adding a four-year residency requirement for all
students. This will strengthen the residential quality of the Adrian
campus, and will help maximize housing capacity to enable the College
to continue to improve student housing in the future. This residency
requirement will not affect commuter students.
In addition to the new options of Pellowe singles, in-hall apartments,
large and small singles, and theme housing, the renovated College
View Apartments that opened this year will continue to be available.
