Bike Patrol On Campus

The bike patrol unit was officially launched on campus in July of 2008.  The Department of Campus Safety purchased one mountain bike to be used by trained Campus Safety personnel.  These trained individuals are required to bike patrol during their shifts, weather permitting.  Campus Safety personnel are required to wear a two-way radio while patrolling.  The bike features a headlight for over-night patrol, and a pouch attached to the back of the seat that contains a first aid kit and flashlight.

Bike patrol plays an important role in the relationship between the Department of Campus Safety and the college community.  Patrolling on mountain bikes enables officers to seek out help in emergency situations more rapidly and to patrol areas that cars cannot.  The bike patrolling unit will not be sent to respond to extreme emergency situations or those where multiple officers are needed.
