POWERHOUSE CALVIN RUNS PAST BULLDOGS
Winkle leads No. 7 Knights to win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Lisa Winkle showed why she’s one of the toughest players in the MIAA to slow down.

The senior recorded her 39th career double-double and sparked the Calvin College Knights to a 67-46 victory over the Adrian College Bulldogs at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

Calvin (17-1, 10-0 MIAA), ranked No. 7 in the recent D3hoops.com national polls, took control of the game with a 12-2 run early in the first half, then pulled away with a 23-6 surge to open the second half.

Adrian (8-10, 3-8 MIAA) traded baskets with the Knights in the first four minutes. Anita Stamps hit 1-of-2 at the line and Liz Hafeli scored a layup, pulling the Bulldogs to within 8-7. That would be as close as Adrian would get the rest of the day.

Winkle and Marcia Harris combined for 10 points during the Knights’ first run. A layup and free throw by Winkle gave Calvin a 20-9 lead just over nine minutes into the game. Adrian got back in the game with a 3-pointer by Priscilla Yeagley and layup from Jenny Carlson. With 2:21 left in the half, Stamps brought the Bulldogs to within 28-20, but Kristi Brummel answered with a 3-pointer.

Two free throws by Winkle gave Calvin a 33-20 lead at halftime.

Layups by Harris and Winkle started the Knights’ big second half run. Brook VanEck gave Calvin its biggest lead of the day at 56-26 with a layup midway through the half. Elysia Norris stopped the run with a 3-pointer for Adrian with 8:23 remaining before the teams exchanged baskets the rest of the game.

For the game, the Knights shot 50 percent from the floor while Adrian hit only 31 percent.
Winkle, who leads the conference in field goal percentage (58.3 percent) and is second in rebounding, finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Harris added 12 points, while Kelly Trewhella handed out five assists for Calvin.

Norris and Kim Olech each scored nine points to lead the Bulldogs. Jennifer Perrin grabbed eight rebounds, while Hafeli had seven rebounds. Meredith Blazejewski finished with eight points for Adrian.

The Bulldogs will return to action Jan. 31 when they host the defending MIAA and NCAA Division III national champion Hope College Flying Dutch. Hope defeated Adrian in the teams’ first meeting Jan. 4 in Holland.
