ONU hands AC women their first loss

ADRIAN, Mich.—The Adrian College women’s basketball team fell to Ohio Northern, 41-71, on Wednesday night at the Merillat Center.

Freshman guard Anita Stamps led AC with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while freshman center Kim Olech and freshman guard Jennifer Perrin tied for the team lead in rebounds with five apiece. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 18 times to ONU’s 13 and were out-rebounded 28-34.

The Bulldogs were cold from the floor, hitting just 36% of their shots, while the Polar Bears raced out to a quick double-digit lead on the strength of 50% first-half shooting.

Sophomore forward Jenny Carlson’s lay-up at the 16:46 mark of the second half sparked a 12-5 Adrian run that cut the ONU lead to 11 with 10 minutes remaining. Northern, however, stretched its lead from the line late in the second half, hitting 12-of-17 charity shots in the final stanza and ended with the 30-point victory.

Northern was led by Jenny Markle’s 21 points.

Adrian falls to 2-1 on the season, while the Polar Bears are now 4-0.

The Bulldogs will open MIAA play on Friday when they travel to Albion College for a 7:30 tip off with the Britons, who are 3-2.

The Adrian JV squad defeated ONU 65-52 earlier in the night. Chloe Hickson led AC with 12 points, while Holly Pellegrin added 10.
