Bulldogs close gap, but fall to Neumann, 62-68
READING,
Penn.—The Adrian College
men’s basketball team dropped their
second game in as many days on Saturday
evening, falling 62-68 in the consolation
game of the Wyndham Tournament at Albright
College in Pennsylvania.
Missed
shots and turnovers by Adrian led to an
11-5 run out of the gate in the second half
for Neumann and the Bulldogs were unable
to cut into the lead until the final minute
of play when a 12-0 Adrian run culminated
in a Matt Wayne lay-up with 14 seconds left
to bring Adrian to within two, 62-64.
Neumann,
however, converted on its two free throw
attempts and forced another AC turnover
in the final seconds to secure the win.
Ryan
Gallus had a tremendous scoring night for
the Bulldogs in a losing effort. Playing
all 40 minutes, the junior guard from Roseville
netted 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting from
the floor with two triples and a free throw.
He also led grabbed eight rebounds and added
three assists and two steals as the Bulldogs
dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Wayne,
a freshman from Riverview, again came off
the bench and had productive minutes, scoring
14 points and leading AC with nine boards
in 20 minutes of play. Corey Smith added
eight points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs,
who will next travel to Rochester College
on Saturday.
Turnovers
were an issue for Adrian, as the young squad
had 27 give-aways to Neumann’s 16.
Neumann scored 27 points off those turnovers,
including 18 in the later half. The Bulldogs
shot 42% from the floor, but hit just 2-of-11
shots from long range in the second stanza.
The
Bulldog’s frontcourt outplayed Neumann’s
throughout the contest, scoring 34 points
in the paint and out-rebounding their opponent
46-37.
In
a tightly contested first half, the score
was tied seven times, but a 12-5 run by
Neumann over the last six minutes gave them
a 29-24 edge at the break.
Neumann’s
D.J. Fritz led all scorers with 20 points,
including 12 points in the second half.
Adrian’s,
0-2, tip off at Rochester on Saturday in
scheduled for 1 p.m.
