Adrian College receives ‘helmet sticker’ on ESPN

ADRIAN, Mich.—Saturday, Sept. 9 was a big day on the national stage for college football. Notre Dame dominated Penn State, Akron upset North Carolina State, and Ohio State, the nation’s top-ranked team, rolled through the University of Texas in Austin.

Mark May, ESPN’s college football analyst, saw another important story emerge from the chaos of this September Saturday, awarding the Adrian College Bulldogs of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association his much-coveted “helmet sticker” on ESPN’s College Football Final re-cap show.

The Bulldogs, who for 45 years shared a football field with a local high school, opened up a brand-new $6.5 million stadium on Saturday.

May, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and two-time Super Bowl champion, explained his pick.

“For the first time in 45 years, Adrian College, a Division III school, played a home game in their own stadium. They shared a high school stadium for the last 45 years. Unfortunately, they lost 0-10 to Defiance. Go Bulldogs.”

The stadium definitely merited the attention. Adrian College’s Performance Stadium features 1,750 chair-back seats, three press boxes, a pavilion with fireplace, a 25’ X 20’ scoreboard with message board, and hillside seating.

The dedication ceremonies for the stadium included fireworks, the unveiling of a 3.5-ton Bulldog statue, and a parachutist delivering the game ball prior to kick-off.

The Bulldogs were outdone by Defiance, 0-10, but were nonetheless, the first football team since 1961 to compete on the Adrian College campus.
