Embry to participate in NFL’s Minority Coaching Program
Adrian College coach to serve as Detroit Lions assistant coach for ’07 training camp

ADRIAN, Mich.—Adrian College defensive line coach Carl Embry has been selected to serve a training camp internship with the Detroit Lions as part of the National Football League’s Minority Coaching Fellowship Program.

The ’04 Adrian College grad and former Bulldog defensive lineman spoke about his upcoming opportunity to learn at the top level of competition.

“Getting an opportunity to coach, network, and learn from NFL coaches is not something everyone gets a chance to do. I just want to work hard to make myself a better coach, help out the Lions organization in any way I can, and come back to Adrian with the things I have learned to help us win an MIAA championship.”

Embry will enter his second season as the Bulldogs’ defensive line coach this fall after previously serving as the head junior varsity coach in 2004. He spent the 2005 season as the wide receivers coach at the University of Findlay.

He will begin his internship with the Lions in mid-July and will be back on the AC campus in time for pre-season camp in mid-August.

Established by the NFL in 1987, the Minority Coaching Fellowship Program provides NFL training camp positions to minority coaches every year. Many current NFL coaches have participated in the program. Some past graduates of the program have gone on to be appointed to NFL coordinator or head-coaching positions including current head coaches Lovie Smith (Chicago Bears), Herman Edwards (Kansas City Chiefs) and Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati Bengals).

Embry’s specific role with the Lions has not yet been determined. As part of training camp coaching staffs, the fellowship coaches perform duties that mirror those of full-time NFL assistant coaches. They are responsible for specific assignments, including planning and directing workouts, formulating scrimmage and preseason-game strategies, breaking down videotape and evaluating players.

The Detroit Lions open pre-season play on August 9 at home against the Cincinnati Bengals at 7:30 p.m.

The Adrian College Bulldogs open their 2007 season on September 1 at Defiance College at 1:30 p.m.
