VENNEKOTTER, NOKOVICH GRAB MIAA MVP AWARDS
Vennekotter named co-top position player, Nokovich tabbed best pitcher in MIAA

The Adrian College Baseball Team was crowned MIAA Champs and punched a ticket to the NCAA Regional during the past week.

Now the individual players that made that feat happen are being honored by the league’s coaches on the All-MIAA teams.

Senior shortstop Tony Vennekotter (Adrian/Adrian HS) was named the co-player of the year, while senior pitcher Jeff Nokovich (Flint/Burton Bendle HS) was tabbed the most valuable pitcher on Tuesday afternoon by the league coaches’.

Vennekotter and Nokovich are also placed on the First Team All-MIAA team and are joined by teammate’s junior outfielder Ryan Sulek (Roseville/St. Clement HS), senior first baseman David Markey (Troy/Athens HS) and utility player sophomore Bobby Rickstad (Kalamazoo/Comstock HS).

Freshman second baseman Todd Meyers (Adrian/Adrian HS) was a Second Team pick, while senior pitcher Craig Reynolds (Pinckney/Pinckney HS), senior third baseman Isaiah Beckman (Niles/Niles HS), sophomore catcher Alexander Younce (Livonia/Churchill HS), senior outfielder Lance Kettinger (Erie/Mason HS), freshman pitcher Adam Stone (Ann Arbor/Huron) and senior utility player Chris Pappas (Dearborn/Dearborn HS) were all named coaches’ honorable mention.

Rickstad is being honored for the second time in his young career on the First Team. Last year he was named the First Team third baseman, while this year he is tabbed as the utility man on the squad. Batting third for Adrian all year, Rickstad hit .345 and drove in 19 runs, while stealing seven bases and making the defensive switch to the outfield. When not roving the outfield, Rickstad was dealing on the mound. He finished the year on the hill 5-1 overall and his ERA of 2.89 was the sixth best in the MIAA.

Markey, a repeat selection at first base, hit .300 and drove in 21 runs for AC. AC’s five hitter cracked out 24 hits and only struck out once in 80 league plate appearances.

Meyers entered the line-up three games into the season and enjoyed a fine rookie campaign. He finished eighth in the MIAA in hitting (.374) and fourth in runs scored with 25. He knocked in 21 runs, while stealing five bases.

Adrian finished 21-7 overall in MIAA play and led the league in hitting (.339), ERA (2.53) and fielding percentage (.960).

BULLDOGS REPEAT AS MIAA CHAMPS DESPITE SWEEP
AC headed to NCAA Regional on May 17

By Ed Patino
Sports Information Assistant

Though it wasn't accomplished the convential way, the repeat is complete.

The Adrian College Bulldogs are MIAA Champions for the second year in a row, despite ending the season with 5-0 and 2-1 losses to the Albion College Britons at Frank Joranko Field.

Adrian (25-15, 21-7 MIAA) actually clinched the title and a spot in the NCAA Regionals two days earlier when Olivet defeated Hope in the opening game of a doubleheader. Hope (26-14, 21-7 MIAA) earned a share of the title by winning its final three games against Olivet, but the Bulldogs hold the tiebreaker, having won three of four games with the Flying Dutchmen.

Albion (23-15-1, 20-8 MIAA) rode its pitching and defense to its victories, holding the Bulldogs to nine hits on the day (five in the first game, four in the nightcap).

In the opener, the Britons broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning as RBI singles by Matt Cook and Bryan Smith gave Albion a 2-0 lead. Cook struck again an inning later, with a two-RBI double that capped a three-run frame. The Bulldogs got two runners on base in the seventh, but Albion escaped the jam.

The loss spoiled a strong outing by pitcher Bobby Rickstad (6-2), who allowed eight hits and struck out five while going the distance. Lance Kettinger went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Adrian, while Todd Meyers, Chad Baas and Isaiah Beckman each added a hit.

Cook finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored to lead Albion. Adam Isreal scattered five hits and struck out two for the pitching win.

The Bulldogs got off to a better start in the nightcap, taking a 1-0 lead when Ryan Sulek scored on a flyout by Mike Hackett in the top of the first. However, Albion loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame and tied the game with Smith's RBI single. Adrian prevented further damage by turning a double play and getting a strikeout by Craig Reynolds.

Adrian advanced a runner to third base in the fifth and sixth innings, but couldn't drive the run in. The Britons took advantage in the bottom of the sixth when Tim Gough scored on Nate Landoski's RBI single. The Bulldogs were retired in order an inning later to end the game.

Reynolds (5-5) was charged with the pitching loss despite allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three in 5 1/3 innings. Sulek, Meyers, Kettinger and Tony Vennekotter each had a hit for the Bulldogs.

Landoski, Gough, Smith, Richard Engelmann and Chris Terry each had a hit for Albion. Mark Roberson recorded the pitching win, allowing one run on four hits and striking out four in six innings. Albion ace John Fileccia threw the final inning and picked up the save.

The Bulldogs will compete in the NCAA Mideast Regional at Rose-Hulman Institute in Terre Haute, Ind. The first round is scheduled to begin May 17.

BULLDOGS ONE WIN AWAY FROM MIAA TITLE
Adrian wins game one thriller; falls in nightcap

And then there was one.

The Adrian College Bulldogs took another step closer to repeating as MIAA champions after splitting a doubleheader with the Albion Britons, winning the first game 1-0 before dropping the nightcap 10-6 at Riverside Park.

While it missed a chance to clinch the title at home, Adrian (25-13, 21-5 MIAA) did accomplish two things. First, the Bulldogs have forced second-place Hope (23-13, 18-6 MIAA) to sweep its four game set with Olivet to give the Flying Dutchmen a chance at taking the title. If Adrian and Hope finished with even MIAA records, the Bulldogs hold the tiebreaker after winning three of four games with the Dutch.

Also, the Bulldogs eliminated Albion (22-15-1, 18-8 MIAA) from the MIAA title race. The Britons needed to sweep the Bulldogs and have the Dutchmen drop one game to Olivet.

It took a little bit of overtime for the Bulldogs to take game one, as Adrian's Jeff Nokovich and Albion ace John Fileccia engaged in a stellar pitcher's duel. After 11 1/2 scoreless innings, Adrian pulled out the win in the bottom of the 12th when Bobby Rickstad scored on Isaiah Beckman's flyout. Rickstad reached base earlier in the frame on an Albion error.

Nokovich (7-1) pitched all 12 innings, holding the Britons to three hits while striking out eight to earn the win. Matt Lipsey was charged with the loss for Albion in relief, allowing the unearned run in 1 2/3 innings. Fileccia went 10 innings, allowing six hits and striking out two.

Ryan Sulek, Tony Vennekotter, David Markey, Chris Pappas, Lance Kettinger and Rickstad had the hits for the Bulldogs. Richard Engelmann, Matt Cook and Tim Gough each had a hit for Albion.

The teams exchanced runs in the first inning of the nightcap, then Adrian grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when Beckman's RBI single scored Pappas. However, the Britons snatched the momentum with three runs in the third inning, then pushed their lead to 6-2 with two more in the top of the fifth.

The Bulldogs answered with two of their own in the bottom of the fifth. After Albion answered with one in the top of the sixth, Adrian pulled to within 7-6 in the bottom of the frame. Beckman scored on an error, then Kettinger scored on a sacrifice bunt by Todd Meyers.

The comeback was halted in the top of the seventh as Albion plated three runs to make it 10-6.

Pappas went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Bulldogs, while Markey went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Meyers and Beckman each added a hit, RBI and run for Adrian. Craig Reynolds (5-4) took the pitching loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits and striking out five in five innings.

Bryan Smith was 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored to lead Albion, while Derek Tracy went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored . Cook finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Ryan Gunderson (6-1) recorded the pitching win, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and striking out two in four innings.

The Bulldogs will travel to Albion for a doubleheader on May 7, needing to win one of the two games to clinch the MIAA title and a trip to the NCAA Regionals. Meanwhile, Hope will host Olivet for a doubleheader May 5, then travel to Olivet on May 6 for another doubleheader.

Nokovich sets new MIAA record in win

The league office announced on Sunday night that Jeff Nokovich was named MIAA player of the week for his performance last week.

Nokovich, who hails from Flint (Burton-Bendle HS), is the pitcher of the week for the second time this season. He threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 batters in a 7-0 victory over Kalamazoo. He is being honored for the fifth time in his career.

With his ninth strike out against Kalamazoo, Nokovich became the all-time leader for strike outs in MIAA history. Nokovich has 216 career strikeouts, beating the league's previous high of 207.

AC will host Albion College on Wednesday, May 3 at 2 p.m.

Adrian College blasted Kalamazoo College in game one Saturday 16-0, but the Hornets used two Adrian College errors and timely hitting to win the nightcap 9-4.

With four games remaining in the MIAA, Adrian has a two game lead on Hope College. AC needs two wins to claim a spot in the NCAA Regional and if the Bulldogs win three they will also be outright champs.

Adrian (24-12 overall, 20-4 MIAA) host Albion on Wednesday at 2 p.m., while the Dutch play Olivet College.

In game one on Saturday, AC broke open a 6-0 game with a 10-run sixth inning. AC starter Bobby Rickstad (6-1) would only need AC's first run of the day, as the sophomore blanked the Hornets on six hits. He struck out five and walked three.

AC's 13 hit attack was led by Ryan Sulek (2 hits, 2 RBI), Todd Meyers (2 hits, 4 runs), David Markey (2 hits, 3 RBI) and Isaiah Beckman (2 hits, 2 RBI). Andrew Anderson added three RBIs, while Tony Vennekotter added one RBI.

In game two, Kzoo struck for runs in the first, second and third innings to claim a 7-4 lead. Adrian would mount a couple of scoring opportunities, but Kzoo pitcher Charlie Mackinnon would erase any thoughts of a Bulldog comeback.

Starting pitcher Adam Stone picked up the loss by tossing 2.0 innings of six-hit ball. He was charged with seven runs, three being earned.

The Bulldogs were held to eight hits, with Meyers and Vennekotter each knocking out two apiece.
