Insurance
Letter
Dear
Student Athletes, Parents, and Guardians,
As you are well
aware of, with the participation of athletic competition
comes injuries that will require medical attention
during a student athlete’s career here at
Adrian College. Clearly, student athletes and
their parents/guardians remain responsible for
the expenses for health, medical and emergency
care, treatment for illness and injuries, which
are not covered by insurance.
However, Adrian
College currently carries an athletic accident
insurance policy, which provides additional coverage
for injuries sustained during a game or supervised
practice with intercollegiate athletics. This
insurance is excess or secondary to any other
collectable group insurance benefits. This means
that any claim for benefits must first be filed
with the group insurance companies providing coverage
to the student athlete through the employers of
the parent/guardian or the student athletes. After
these companies have paid all available benefits,
our athletic insurance company, First Agency,
Inc., will then review the claim to determine
if any remaining unpaid bills are covered by the
College’s insurance policy.
Please note that
Adrian College does not have the option of waiving
the requirement of first filing claims with your
our group insurance company. Furthermore, there
are also very specific procedures that needed
to be followed when seeking medical attention
for the student athlete. Please read and follow
all insurance information and directions carefully
in order to minimize the possibility of unpaid
bills.
The College stresses
the fact that this coverage applies only to injuries
that occur while participating in the play or
practice of supervised intercollegiate sports.
It does not cover illness, pre-existing injuries,
dental, vision, or any other medical problems
not related to such accidents n play or practice.
The athletic
training staff will provide many types of medical
care and treatment, but it may also seek medical
attention form other sources. The College provides
the additional insurance to assist our student
athletes and their parent/guardians. However,
the insurance carriers in accordance with the
policy limits will generally determine any of
the disputes as to whether or not a claim will
be paid.
Sincerely,
Jamison

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Many employers’
group insurance policies allow dependent coverage
to continue until the age of 24 if the dependent
is a full-time student. It may be in your best
financial interest to not drop dependent insurance
during the time of participating in intercollegiate
athletics.
2. By utilizing
both your group insurance and our athletic accidental
insurance, it is possible that many bills for
injuries will be paid in full, or at least to
the extent the coverage allows. It is intended
to work with your group insurance making payments
after your group insurance has paid all allowable
benefits.
3. Adrian College’s
accidental athletic insurance acts only as a secondary
insurance because it takes effect after your group
insurance pays what it considers to be “usual
and customary” expense for the treatment
provided.
4. All student-athletes
that, and is on the official roster, are automatically
enrolled in our accidental athletic insurance.
(This is separate from the student health insurance
program.)
5. Any pre-existing
injuries, “wear and tear” injuries,
or off-season injuries (i.e. injuries in P.E.
classes, intramural sports, recreational activities,
etc.) are not eligible for coverage.
6. All injuries
need to be reported the Athletic Training staff
or within 10 days of the injury in order to have
insurance activated and authorized.
7. A referral
is required from the Adrian College certified
athletic trainers if the college’s secondary
insurance policy is to cover any portion of the
charges incurred from the athletically related
injury. Any circumvention of these procedures
will negate Adrian College’s commitment
to cover costs associated with treatment of the
athletic injury.
8. It is the
responsibility of the student athlete to fill
out the proper insurance claim paperwork at the
Health Center within 10 days of the injury.
9. If you receive
any bills related to an injury, please bring/mail
them to the Health Center.
10. It is required
by Adrian College that all full time students
(12 credit hours or more) must have health insurance,
whether it is your parents/guardian group insurance
or insurance through Adrian College. All full
time students will be automatically enrolled in
the student health insurance available through
Adrian College. If you do not want the College’s
insurance then you must fill out a decline waiver
form or your student account will be charged for
the services. This decline waiver form can be
obtained from Goldsmith Health Center (517)-265-5161
