Keynote Speaker Will Help Kick
Off Women’s Studies Minor at Adrian
ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College
is introducing a women’s studies minor, and is
organizing an event to help get the word out. “Women,
Internet Research, and Activism: Making Women's Studies
Relevant Today” is scheduled Thursday, Oct. 19.
A luncheon is planned at noon in Arrington
Auditorium in Caine Student Center. Keynote speaker
Jessica Valenti will present “Why Feminism is
Cool.” It is free and open to the public.
Valenti is a 27-year-old feminist
writer from New York. She is executive editor of feministing.com,
an online forum that provides young women the opportunity
to speak on their own behalf on issues that affect their
lives and futures. Valenti has worked for organizations
such as Planned Parenthood and Ms. Magazine, and has
a master’s degree in women's and gender studies
from Rutgers University.
An expo is scheduled in Caine Student
Center from 11 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. It
will feature organizations that aid local women/girls,
including Catherine Cobb Domestic Violence Shelter,
Adrian Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters
of Lenawee, Cambios, and Zonta International. A table
on eating disorders is also planned.
Women’s studies at Adrian is
an interdisciplinary program that examines the past
and the present from the perspective of women and gender.
Students are encouraged to take classes that focus on
women’s experiences and the construction of gender
roles and identities from a variety of areas, including
history, psychology, religion, English, communications,
and sociology. The goals of the women’s studies
minor are:
* to introduce both male and female
students to the often neglected contributions of women
in the sciences, medicine, humanities, social sciences,
and the arts.
* to explore the relationships between
gender, race, class, ethnicity, and sexual identity
and how these dynamics shape human experiences in
different cultures.
* to think critically about the
construction of gender and to take seriously the impact
that gender stereotypes can have on society.
* to help students become more aware
of women’s experiences so that they can be more
sensitive and effective in professions such as social
work, education, medicine, counseling, law, and administration.
The minor creates an interdisciplinary
track utilizing classes that Adrian already offers.
The 2006-07 academic year is the first time it has been
in place.

Lectureship, Alpha Kappa Delta Honor Society, and the
Academic Affairs office. The luncheon and expo are free
and open to the public.
