PROFESSOR AWARDED COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT GRANT

Students to help build business on Adrian's East Side

Michigan Campus Compact has awarded Dr. Bill Tregea, professor of sociology/criminal justice/human services, with a Community Engagement Grant for the 2002-2003 academic year. Tregea's project, "Revitalization of an Inner City Business Corridor: Academic Service Learning as part of Community Crime Prevention Coalition," focuses on community members in a 26-block target area who are interested in starting small businesses, as identified by the East Side Community Coalition. A small business consultant will be hired to train residents on Adrian's East Side. This project will expose criminal justice students to the business dimension of neighborhood stability through surveys, interviewing, and training observation.

Tregea is one of six recipients of a Community Engagement Grant this year. Awards range up to $2,000 for the development and implementation of a partnership between a higher education institution and either community based organization or a K-12 school system. Grants are intended to support collaborations between the institutions and the local community, to include students, and to provide professional development for all involved.

Michigan Campus Compact is a state-level non-profit organization that promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular, and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.
