ADRIAN, MI. – In its second year of display, the Valade Art Gallery on the Adrian College campus is set to open the season with a unique portrayal of identity and appearance through the eyes of three individual artists entitled “Embodiment”. Beginning August 24th and running through September 17th, this exhibition will boast works spanning many media, including: oil and encaustic painting, sound, sculpture, photography, drawing, and woodcut.
Molly Marie Nuzzo, one of the three artists featured, defines embodiment as “the relationship between personal identity and physical appearance.” Each of the artists, (Nuzzo, Shaqe Kalaj, and Brenda Oelbaum), explore this relationship through personal perception which include social construction of gender; cultural norms of weight/beauty/and age; historical or traditional representations of women; and empowerment or marginalization.

The artists will speak and answer questions about the exhibit during a reception, in the gallery, on Thursday, September 8, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Kalaj will provide additional programming on September 8, including an artist talk about the development of her work at noon and a Q and A about Art & Ideas, a contemporary art gallery and studio in Plymouth providing exhibitions, lectures, classes, workshops, and creativity coaching (http://www.artandideasgallery.com/). Art & Ideas is owned by Kalaj and Michael Tolinski.
Valade Gallery, in its second year, is located off of the entrance lobby of Shipman Library on the Adrian College campus, 110. S. Madison Street.
