PRESIDENT ASKS STUDENT GOVERNMENT TO HELP IMPROVE STUDENT LIFE posted 9/14/05

Now that Jeffrey Docking is president of Adrian College, one of the first things he’s doing is getting the input of students on how to further enhance student life.

At a Sept. 12 meeting of the executive board of the Student Government Association (SGA), he announced a new task force on the issue.

“Today, I am announcing the first step in a new direction for Student Life at Adrian College,” Docking said in a memo to the board. “We have listened and now it is time for action.”

One of the main goals of the task force will be to create new initiatives that will add vibrancy to the student activities program on campus. Docking was clear about what they should emphasize: focus on the weekends, by crafting a calendar of weekend activities that will engage Adrian students in exciting new ways.

“I’m very excited,’” said Samantha Lumetta, SGA board member.

“I think it’s going to mean a lot more fun on campus, a lot more freedom,” she added.

The task force has also been asked to review the judicial process and identify revisions for the student code of conduct.

The board’s recommendations to the president are due Jan. 1, at which time they will be reviewed and implemented.

Students on the task force will consist of two SGA members, a student on the Athletic Advisory Council, a student at large, and a commuter student. It will also include two faculty members, a member of the admissions staff, the head of student affairs, the head of student activities, and a representative from the city of Adrian.

Docking has requested recommendations from the board on who should fill the seats.

Lumetta said that when the SGA board heard the announcement, everyone wanted to be on the task force.

“It’s a chance to work with the president one-on-one, to get our ideas heard and to change things,” she said.
