GALLERY HOSTS "WAKING DREAMS" EXHIBIT
posted 11/4/03

“Waking Dreams” is an
exhibition of sculptures and paintings by two Detroit
artists: Sandra Cardew and Renata Palubinskas. The exhibition
is scheduled in Stubnitz Gallery Nov.6 through Dec.15.
Renata Palubinskas mixes familiar
people, places, and objects with darkly fantastic elements
to make paintings that express dreams, myths, and fears.
She was born in Lithuania and earned a fine arts degree
and an associate’s degree in art and conservation
from the Kaunas Technicum of Applied Arts in 1989. Palubinskas’
paintings are shown in galleries in the Midwest and
on the West Coast.
Sandra Cardew is a Detroit native
and she collects and mixes materials, such as doll parts,
puppets, and scrap wood into unique sculptures. She
began studying visual arts in the 1980s after a long
career in theater as a dancer and choreographer. Cardew
received her MFA from Wayne State University in 1992
and has exhibited extensively in the Detroit area. Cardew
has taught photography and design at Lawerence Technological
University and Wayne State University.
