| ‘BETWEEN
ART AND LIFE’ STARTS OFF STUBNITZ SEASON
posted 8/26/05
Adrian College’s Stubnitz Gallery
hosts “Between Art and Life” Aug. 29 through
Sept. 24, an exhibition that reveals the dialogue between
five artists and their artwork.
The exhibition takes its title from
Robert Rauschenberg’s famous 1959 quote: “Painting
relates to both art and life. Neither can be made. (I
try to act in that gap between the two.)” The
artists address that gap in a variety of ways.

The five artists are Tom Thewes, Jr.
(der Lärm), a painter from Detroit; Charles Wish,
a painter from Los Angeles; Martha Bruin Degen, a fiber
artist from the Washington, D.C., area; Dahlia Elsayed,
a mixed media artist from New Jersey; and Bruce Robinson,
a painter who works with plywood who lives in Columbus,
Ohio.
Thewes’ and Wish’s work
is on display thanks to the collaboration of Rick Manore,
founder and director of C-Pop, 4160 Woodward Ave., Detroit.
Thewes owns C-Pop Gallery.
Elsayed will give a slide talk at
12:15 p.m. on Sept. 14 in Mahan Hall, Room 8. Robinson
will speak at a reception in the gallery that begins
at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 21.
Stubnitz Gallery is located

Mich. Hours are Monday-Saturday noon-4 p.m., Thursday
