“Somewhere underneath that stone lives a Bulldog.”

Soon this beloved Adrian symbol will greet visitors to the new stadium. This is what John “Jack” Shimko wrote in a recent email to Jeff Docking, Adrian College president. Attached to his email were photos of a sculpture that Shimko has commissioned that will soon reside at the entrance of the new multisport performance stadium. As an alumnus and former football player, Shimko is excited about the stadium project and wanted to do his part to build Bulldog pride. He and his wife, Elizabeth Warnshuis Shimko, are 1979 graduates of Adrian, and reside in Grand Rapids, Mich. Jack was recently named to the Adrian College Board of Trustees.

The stone goes into the studio.

Everything is ready for work to begin.

Plans are made, and lines are drawn.

The statue is estimated to now weigh less than three tons.
