“Wow,
it’s amazing! It’s beyond my expectations.”
When the students returned to campus this fall to see
newly-remodeled Ridge for the first time, these were
some of the things they said. The process to convert
the former Ridge Gymnasium into a fully-modern, 24-hour
student center began in the spring of 2003 and was completed
this summer.
Construction costs were approximately
$4.7 million. About $4.4 million of that has been raised,
thanks to the generous support of donors. The College
still aims to raise the remainder, and to create an
endowment for the building. (giving opportunities)
Ridge houses the Career Center, art
studios, computer lab, student mailboxes, offices for
student organizations and College staff, a snack bar,
a coffee cart by a local coffee house, and a TV/game
room. Comfortable seating is available beneath the central
atrium, which is surrounded by a balcony that is accessible
from a glass elevator. Wireless internet is available.
A variety of meeting spaces are available to the campus
and the community.
The new design is careful to
maintain elements of the old gymnasium, including exposed
bleachers, a scoreboard, and a jump circle in the carpet
at “center court.”
