ADRIAN COLLEGE RECEIVES
GRANTS TO RETAIN MINORITIES posted
2/9/06
Adrian College was recently awarded
two grants from the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund
through the Michigan Colleges Foundation (MCF) totaling
$12,700. The awards are for two multicultural programs,
“Intelligent Mentors/Mentees Promoting and Cultivating
Success,” (IMPACS) and “Rising Over Obstacles
and Tribulations” (ROOT).
Both programs aim to ensure the transition,
development, academic success, and retention of minority
students at Adrian College.
The IMPACS program provides peer mentors
as well as alumni and professional mentors to minority
students. This program will be open to any alumni or
professionals who wish to participate.
The ROOT program is designed to ensure
the retention, academic success, graduation and sense
of community amongst African-American males at Adrian
College.
According to The Journal of Blacks
in Higher Education, the national graduation rate of
Black men was 24 percent in 2004. Adrian College responded
to this by designing the ROOT program to assist African-American
males in making the transition to an institution of
higher learning.
The awards were granted as a result
of dedicated work on the part of the college’s
director of multicultural affairs, Antoinette Gray.
Adrian College is an independent
liberal arts institution in southeast Michigan. For
