Prof Selected
to Head International Studies Association
WAIS headquarters to move from
Stanford University to Adrian College posted
9/5/06
ADRIAN, Mich. – John Eipper,
associate professor of modern languages and cultures
at Adrian College, has been selected to head the World
Association of International Studies (WAIS).
“This is one of the most respected
international societies in the world,” said Dale
Nesbary, Adrian’s vice president and dean of academic
affairs. “Included among its members are scholars
of the highest order, representing some of the most
prestigious institutions of higher education.”
WAIS (wais.stanford.edu)
was founded in 1965. Its aim is to promote peace through
a continual discussion of world affairs in an informed
and courteous manner. Members hail from all over the
world, including Lisbon, Brazil and Moscow, and represent
such institutions as Oxford, Stanford, and UC Berkeley.
Eipper’s duties will include
moderating the online discussion forum and helping to
run the annual conference. WAIS will remain a Stanford
organization, but a consortium arrangement with Stanford
will permit headquarters to be relocated with Eipper
in Adrian. A course reduction will allow him to complete
his new duties.
“It’s an incredible honor
for Professor Eipper, and puts us on the map in terms
of international studies,” Nesbary said.
Eipper replaces Ronald Hilton, Stanford
professor emeritus and leader of WAIS for 41 years.
Eipper was asked to fill the position after presenting
a paper this summer at the WAIS conference at Stanford.
Eipper earned his doctorate
in Spanish from the University of Michigan. In addition
to Spanish, he knows a great deal of French, Portuguese
and Russian, and is presently learning Japanese. He
has traveled throughout Europe and Latin America.
