DISABILITIES AWARENESS WEEK IS COMING TO CAMPUS posted 3/3/05

Adrian College will host Disabilities Awareness Week 2005, "No Barriers," Monday, March 14 through Friday, March 18. The following events are free and open to the public. For more information, call Patricia Gray at 517-265-5161, ext. 4090.

Monday, March 14
Inspirational speaker and author Pamela Gilchrist will discuss fibromyalgia in the Arrington Auditorium of Ridge Student Center. Gilchrist has suffered from fibromyalgia since 1994. Bring your own lunch; cookies and drinks will be provided.

Wednesday, March 16
At 5:15 p.m., a reception for artist Cody Miller will be held in the Heritage Room of Shipman Library. Miller, who has cerebral palsy, teaches art to adults with disabilities at Art Bridge Studio in Columbus, Ohio. His paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries, art festivals, and museums. His work and his students' work will be on display in the Heritage Room from March 7 through March 31. (More on Cody Miller.)

Wednesday, March 30
Guitarist J.P. Williams will perform at 8:30 p.m. in Ridge Student Center. Williams is a full-time musician, and has opened for such performers as Bruce Hornsby, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Charlie Daniels, CCR, Ricky Skaggs, and Edwin McCain. He was born blind in one eye, and lost sight in the other at age 10.

Other speakers for the week include John Haught, Goodwill director of workforce development, Beth Riggle, a United States Paralympic gold medalist, and former State Rep. Doug Spade. Events for Adrian College students include "Dinner with a Disability" night, goalball, and a showing of the film "A Beautiful Mind."
