COMMUNICATION EXPERT TO GIVE INSIGHTS ON SMALL TALK posted 9/15/05
Julia Wood to speak at Convocation

Dr. Julia Wood is scheduled to speak in Dawson Auditorium on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 12:15 p.m. as part of the Convocation speaker series. Her speech is entitled “Small Talk” and will focus on the effects that small talk has on interpersonal relationships.

Wood has been a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the field of Communication since 1975. Wood’s writings and teachings focus on gender, communication, and culture, as well as personal relationships and feminist theories. During her career, she has had a part in 20 books, by either authoring or editing them. She has written well over 50 articles and chapters in different books and presented over 60 papers at international, national, and regional conferences.

She has won several awards for her teaching style and also her writing style. She was the recipient of the 1998 Board of Governors award for teaching at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In the same year, she won the Case/Carnegie Award for the North Carolina Professor of the Year.

The Communication Department of Adrian College utilizes several of Wood’s books in everyday instruction. Professor Joanna Schultz has worked personally with Wood, and holds her in high regard. “I highly recommend her presentation. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed,” Schultz said.

Dawson Auditorium is located off of Charles Street on the Adrian College campus. This event is free and open to the public. (campus map)
