MINNIJEAN BROWN
TRICKEY TO SPEAK AT CONVOCATION
posted 2/3/05
Minnijean
Brown Trickey, one of the Little Rock Nine, is scheduled
to speak in Dawson Auditorium on Wednesday, Feb. 16
at 12:15 p.m., as part of the Convocation speaker series.
The Little Rock Nine was a group of
African-American teenagers who in September of 1957
faced down an angry mob and 1,200 armed soldiers to
enter an all-white high school. Their actions helped
lead the way to desegregation, and earned them a place
in history.
This event was just the beginning
for Trickey. Over the years she has continued to fight
for civil rights and social equality. For her work,
she has received the U.S. Congressional Medal, the Wolf
Award, the Spingarn Medal, and many other citations
and awards. During the Clinton administration, Trickey
served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Department
of the Interior responsible for diversity for a period
of time.
Drawing on
her experiences with the Little Rock Nine, Trickey will
provide a fascinating exploration of social change,
diversity, and the battle against discrimination and
racism. She will also offer an understanding of both
how far we have come as a society and how far we still
have to go.
Dawson Auditorium is located
on Charles Street. (campus
