BILLY BEANE TO SPEAK AT CONVOCATION posted 2/25/05

Billy Beane, the general manager of Major League Baseball's Oakland A's, is scheduled to speak in Dawson Auditorium on Wednesday, March 16 at 12:15 p.m., as part of the Convocation speaker series.

In his speech, "Moneyball: Same Game, New Rules," Beane will use a down-to-earth style mixed with some humor to talk about lessons for business success. Drawing on his experience with the Oakland A's, Beane uses stories from his own life that will help listeners become more effective managers and leaders in both their personal and professional lives.

For the past three years, Beane has been taking on the big boys in baseball, winning more often than not, and making fools out of the owners who insist that baseball's economics are out of whack. Beane has figured out how to succeed with a limited payroll, and his methods are driving a lot of old baseball hardheads crazy. Even though Beane's playing career never panned out, due to his quick business sense he has changed the landscape of the baseball organization.

Convocation is free and open to the public. Dawson Auditorium is located on Charles Street. (campus map)
