"Adrian College"
The main figure is Dr. Asa Mahan, Congregational
minister and founder of Adrian College in 1859.
The flaming torch with broken chains symbolizes Mahan's struggle in behalf
of freedom of slaves, coeducational higher education, and other issues
of his time. A picture of historic North Hall is at the upper right.
From the rich history of the College, selected period representations
of student life are depicted, including the impact of three wars, the
first graduation - 1861, first woman graduate - 1864, first theological
literary Society at Adrian, and first issue of Adrian College Recorder.
As George Eliot has written, "Some call her memory and some tradition,
and her voice is sweet with deep mysterious accords." Thus many know
her as "Dear Adrian, Alma Mater."
