1940s

Carlton Dettman '48 received an award from the Michigan State Medical Society for having practiced medicine for 50 years. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1952, after completing his pre-medical degree from AC. Carlton began practicing medicine in Montrose following his discharge from the U.S. Army. He and his wife, Gloria Beebe Dettman '48, live in Montrose, where he continues to practice medicine, and Gloria works as his office manager.

1950s

Fred "Fritz" Pinkerman '59 recently retired after 43 years of teaching. His assignments included Bedford Public Schools in Michigan, and Lucas County Educational Services in Ohio. He also retired from his fishing charter service after 20 years on the Great Lakes. He and his wife, Sylvia McCracken Pinkerman '60, who retired recently from The University of Toledo, plan to visit their children in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, as well as various relatives throughout the United States. Fritz has already expanded his fishing experiences to include a fly-in trip to Canada with his son-in-law and grandson and a tarpon tournament in Boca Grande, Fla. Fritz and Sylvia live in Temperance, and would enjoy hearing from old friends at pinkerman@aol.com.

1960s

Benja Sides Filkill '64, and grandson Ryan, visited campus during their annual drive from their home in Texas to their summer home in northern Michigan.  Benja is proudly holding the Adrian College Scholarship cup, which she was awarded in 1964.  This cup is awarded to students who earned a 4.0 grade point average for four consecutive years.

1970s

Ted Johnson '72 is the new director and head of marketing for El Pescador Fly Fishing Resorts in Belize, Central America. He invites everyone to visit their website at www.elpescador.com. Ted reports that the fishing is great; this is his best use of his biology degree yet!

Connie Grimes Llewellyn '73 recently moved to Fremont, where she teaches fourth grade. She earned her master's degree in reading, and has three children, Garth, Morgan and Emily.

The Dexter Leader reports that in August, then-Governor John Engler named Timothy "T.J." Spencer '73 to the Michigan Board of Chiropractic. During his three-year term, he will help to regulate chiropractic therapy in the state. Spencer's chiropractic practice is in Dexter, where he resides with his wife Brooke.

Deborah Keppers Lonon '77 was recently invited to join the faculty of the International Institute for Readers Theatre in London. For two weeks each July, she will be teaching scriptmaking, oral interpretation, directing and other Readers Theatre techniques to a group of international students at King's College. For the past three years, Deborah has served as department chair of English/communications at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in Asheville, N.C. This fall, she was asked to head the Quality Enhancement Planning component of that institution's upcoming accreditation process. Deborah lives in Mation, N.C, with her husband, Dr. Bill Lonon, and son Christopher, 12. She is a frequent visitor to New York City, where best friend Don Carroll '76 lives.

Weddings

Rebecca Limbird '73 and Stephen Rohre were married June 30, 2001, during an outdoor wedding at the St. Clair Inn in St. Clair. Becky is employed by the University of Michigan, as the personnel representative for the plant building services department of the facilities and operations division. The couple lives in Ypsilanti.

1980s

Carol Andersen '82 has returned to the teaching profession after a 20-year hiatus. She is in her second year back and teaches Spanish I and IV at Westminster High School in Westminster, Colo.

The U.S. Army promoted Dean Wiley '83 of Huntsville, Ala., from the rank of major to captain during an October ceremony.

Robert King '83 recently began a new job with Bristol-Myers Squibb in Lawrenceville, N.J., as a principal investigator and head of the molecular biology group in the Division of Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies. In addition, he has recently started his own business, Crown Custom Bonsai, in which he designs and creates commissioned bonsai for the home and garden.

Glenn DeLong '84 and his wife Jeanne performed in the musical "The Scarlet Pimpernel" in Windsor, Canada, in November. Jeanne played the lead female part of Marguerite, and Glenn played the role of the sinister villain Chauvelin. Glenn is an emergency room physician at Mt. Clemens Hospital. The DeLongs live in Shelby Township.

Barb Fairman '85 was re-elected for another term as treasurer for the Belleville Area Council for the Arts board of directors. This past year, Barb has also been involved with the Michigan Flute Orchestra, playing her newest instrument, the bass flute. In her free time, she also plays on a volleyball team and continues to be active with the Pontchartrain Alumni chapter of the Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity, and will be historian for this group for another year. She was one of the chapter soloists at a joint recital with another alumni chapter, and is gearing up for the 100th anniversary of SAI. Barb continues to work at Flute World Co. in Farmington Hills, overseeing the instrument department.

Births

John Hiner '82 and his wife Kathy announce the birth of Carly Rose, born Easter Sunday (March 31, 2002). She has a stepbrother, Alex, 9. They live near Bay City, where John is an editor at the newspaper and Kathy is a schoolteacher.

Janet U'Ren Wisuri '86 and her husband Paul announce the birth of their seventh child, Nathan Peter, on June 3. He joins siblings Erik, 11, Emily, 10, Alex, 7, Mary, 6, Hanna, 4, and Leah, 2. The Wisuri family lives in Ishpeming.

John Papas '88 and his wife Karen announce the birth of Joseph Robert, on Oct. 23, 2001. He joins sister Adrianna, 7, and Nick, 5. John is employed with DaimlerChrysler. The family lives in Macomb Township.

Becky Gerace De Roo '89 and her husband Chris announce the birth of their daughter, Caroline Elisa, on Aug. 26. She joins Tony, 10, Jared, 6, and Ally, 4. The De Roo family recently moved to Charlotte, N.C., where Becky is a stay-at-home mom.

1990s

Mark Phlegar '95 of Columbus, Ohio, ran his second Columbus Marathon in October. He finished the marathon with a time of three hours, four minutes and 33 seconds, placing 143rd out of 3,258 runners. Mark's time has qualified him for his first Boston Marathon in April 2003.

Randy Browne '97, Matt Farney '97, George Lance, Curt Beagle '97 and Ted Stebbins '97 made their most recent summit at Half Dome, in Yosemite National Park in August. The group has been pursuing similar adventures together since graduation.

Births

Elizabeth Felske Frownfelter '90 and her husband John announce the birth of their son, Zachary John, on Sept. 18. Elizabeth works for Nationwide Insurance as a financial services analyst, and John is an account manager for Shoemaker Industrial Solutions in Columbus, Ohio. The Frownfelter family lives in Pataskala, Ohio, and Elizabeth welcomes e-mail at frownie32@aol.com.

Doug Miller '90 and his wife Kristen announce the birth of their second daughter, Camryn Grace, on July 6. Her sister, Kyla Nicole, is 2. Doug works as a power trader for Calpine Corp., in Houston, Texas. The Millers live in Clear Lake, Texas.

Michael Turala '91 and his wife Wendy announce the birth of Madelyn Mackenzie on Dec. 4, 2001. Mike is a client executive with EDS, and Wendy is an account executive with EquiFirst. They live in Chesterfield.

Julie Romanowski Snider '92 and her husband John announce the birth of Maria Elizabeth, born Aug. 18. The Snider family lives in Allen Park.

Gary Ward '93 and Danielle Ducharme-Ward '93 announce the birth of their daughter, Brynne Sylvia Ducharme Ward, on Sept. 24. After a short leave, Danielle will be returning to her position as a vice president with PNC Financial Services. Gary is employed as an I.T. Specialist within the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. The Ward family lives in Cranberry Township, Pa.

Heidi Larson Parsons '94 and her husband Jonathan announce the birth of their first child, Kaitlyn Ann, on June 5, 2001. Heidi has taken a year off from teaching, and Jonathan has started a new job as head golf professional at Schaumburg Golf Club and Academy, in Schaumburg, Ill.

Danelle Perkins Gittus '97 and her husband Scott announce the birth of Brenna Elaine, born June 13. The Gittus family lives in Hartland.

Melissa LaMay Hughes '97 and her husband Bill announce the birth of Zoe Kathleen on Sept. 14, 2001. She joined sister Emma, 2. The Hughes family lives in Fraser, where Melissa works as a freelance commercial producer.

WEDDINGS

Denise Welhusen '92 and Bryan Huttenlocker were married June 15 at the Ella Sharp Rose Garden in Jackson. Denise is employed by the State of Michigan, as a parole agent in Jackson. Bryan is a Sheriff's Deputy for the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Wedding guests included Julie Agosti Shallow '92, Rachelle May Gentile '93 and former AC student Janet Gouhl Grant. The couple lives in Spring Arbor with their dog, Hank.

Michelle Akers '93 and Jonathan Berg were married April 12 in Rochester Hills. Michelle worked at Cranbrook Institute of Science, and is now the archivist at the Rochester Hills Museum. Jonathan is a network administrator at ArvinMeritor in Troy. In attendance at the wedding were Cyndi Koppelman '93, Wes '93 and Saralyn Popham Tapp '93, and Matt '92 and Kristin Hautamaki Russelburg '93. Michelle and Jonathan live in Rochester Hills.

Jodi Brothers '95 and John Forster were married Jan. 19 in Plymouth. Jodi is a marketing teacher and DECA advisor at Novi High School and John is a social studies teacher and girls and boys tennis coach at Dearborn Fordson High School. Attending as maid of honor was Shanda Dean Arthurs '95. Guests included Julie Beam Raftery '95, Nicole Chiesa '95, Colleen Diegel Wisinski '94, Jen Dobrovolec Zavadil '96, Amy Hassig Smith '96, Meghan Harple '01, Kim Halbeisen '95, Noelle Hinkle '95, Matt '94 and Kim Kendall Stephens '94, Mark Piper '94, Brad '94 and Jen Kosanivic Place '96, and Dana Voss Hayes '96. Jodi and John live in Dearborn.

Tara Richason '99 and Joshua Fisher were married Dec. 1, 2001, in Ida. Tara is a preschool director and teacher at Bemis Farms Preschool in Saline. Serving as bridesmaids were Amie Richason-Bugg '93, Kim Cook Hirvela '97, Fawn Devitis '99 and Kristin Cook '01. Also in attendance were Jim '00 and Lora Cromwell Mahony '00, Megan Meers '99 and Mike Hirvela '98. Tara and Josh live in Petersburg.

2000s

Libby Fetherston '00 lives in Anchorage, Alaska, where she is in her third year working as an observer on a large fishing boat (over 200 feet) recording the contents of each catch and reporting the information to the National Maritime Fisheries Service of Alaska. Libby has been accepted at Duke University's Environmental Science Graduate School in marine biology, and plans to begin studies in September. In between tours in Alaska, Libby has traveled to Costa Rica, Europe and Southeast Asia.

Nikki Griffin-Jones '02 of Adrian recently started a new position as a 911 dispatch operator for the Lenawee County Sheriff's Department.

WEDDINGS

Laura Perlaky '01 and Nicholas Young were married Aug. 31, 2001, in Elliston, Ohio. Laura attends optometry school at Ohio State University. Nick is employed at Riverside Hospital in the patient relations office. The couple lives in Columbus, Ohio. Alumni attending the wedding were Jenn Stinehelfer '01, Jill Ostroe '01, and Tomas '99 and Aubrey Repicky Hajek '01.

 

In Memoriam

F. Evelyn Beck '30, of Adrian, died May 27. Evelyn taught history and English at Romulus High School before obtaining a master's degree in nursing education and administration. She worked at several hospitals, retiring from Harper Hospital in Detroit in 1972. At Evelyn's bequest, memorial contributions may be made to the R. Evelyn Beck Scholarship Fund at AC, or the First United Methodist Church of Adrian.

Ruth Leader Shoup '31, elementary school teacher for 35 years, died Aug. 12. She was preceded in death by her husband, Foster Shoup '32. Survivors include one daughter and two grandchildren.

Harry Watkins '42, of Chico, Calif., died July 27. A member of SAE, Harry served in the U.S. Army after graduation. He was a property accountant for Ford Motor Company for 30 years. In 1997, he moved from Dearborn to Chico. Survivors include his wife Ruth Fuetterer Watkins '45, two daughters, three grandchildren and a brother.

Karl Schneider '47, retired bank director of United Bank & Trust and resident of Tecumseh, died Sept. 1. Surviving are his wife, Nina, three children, a stepson, three grandchildren and one sister.

Edward Brown '50, of Adrian, died Oct. 19. Edward had worked at Ace Drill for 34 years, retiring in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy.

Glenn Poucher '50, of Adrian, and former owner of Central Motor Company, died Sept. 30. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, and a brother, Robert Poucher '50 of Adrian. Memorial contributions in Glenn's memory may be made to the Ridge Student Center Project.

Adolph Bierlein '52, a retired electrician with the U.S. Government and resident of Elephant Butte, N.M., died Oct. 30. Al is survived by his wife, Charline, two sons, a daughter, his mother, a brother, two sisters and three granddaughters.

Meredith Daniels Borton '52, of Mira Loma, Calif., died Oct. 1. Meredith, a teacher and manager in corporate human relations departments, was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Borton '50. She is survived by four children and three sisters.

Roger Allshouse '54, of Mesa, Ariz., died Aug. 15. Roger had worked as a project engineer for International Harvester, and retired as a design engineer for Crafco Inc. in 1995. He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn, three children, four grandchildren and two brothers.

Larry Goodes '59, of Wapakoneta, Ohio, and retired superintendent of Auglaize County Schools, died Nov. 2. Larry was awarded the College's Service Award in 1998, and had served as a trustee and member of the Alumni Board. He was also a member of SAE. Survivors include his wife, Paula Gass Goodes '60, and a son, Major Jeffery Goodes '89, four grandchildren and his mother.

Richard G. Wiegert '54 died Nov. 4. Dick was a professor of marine sciences at the University of Georgia. Colleagues said, "Those who knew Dick will remember him for his enormous intelligence, his great sense of humor, his love of a good story, his insatiable curiosity about how the world around him worked, and his great love of books and learning." He is survived by his wife, Liz McGhee.

Bruce Hatch '69, a resident of Gwinn and member of the Detroit Conference of United Methodist Churches, died Oct. 17, 2001. He served at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming. Bruce was formerly chairperson of the Midland County Board of Mental Health. He is survived by his wife, Lois Norrell Hatch '69, a son, his parents and two brothers.

Brent L. McCormack '76 of Hicksville, Ohio, died June 7 following an extended illness. Brent was the former owner of McCormack Landscaping, a Hicksville and Four-County school board member and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Jill, his children, Matthew and Stacie, and one granddaughter.

Friends

Marvin R. Patterson, 85, died Aug. 17. The longtime Grand Haven businessman was an AC trustee from 1972 to 1978, where he represented the West Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church. He also served as a member of the Adrian College Board of Associates from 1979 to 1985.
