Looking Back

Nothing captures the culture of a college campus quite like a student newspaper. To get a feel for student life 100, 50 and 25 years ago, we perused back issues of the College World. Read on to see what was on the minds of AC students in 1902, 1952 and 1977:

100 Years Ago - Winter 1902

"Local Gossip" was the name of a popular column in the College World, and apparently nothing was safe from scrutiny:

"It is said that Mr. Ramsey gained weight during vacation."

"Miss Brace has added a new bookcase to the furnishings of her room."

"Mr. S___n has lately been reading 'Love's Labor's Lost.' We wonder why."

50 Years Ago - Winter 1952

Remember pinnings? In "South Hall Doings," the author reveled in sharing the inside scoop:

"Only one pinning took place during vacation. None other than our own Ev Berry came back sporting an Alpha Tau Omega pin. The owner answers to Don Bleam.

"As is tradition, Ev received a bang-up dunking complete with about 10 brands of cheap cologne, brown and white shoe polish, orange juice, cold water, bluing and no one can exactly say what else went into the brew. We might call the concoction 'Don Ev,' which sounds rare - and that's the way she smelled after the dunking too!"

25 Years Ago - Winter 1977

A power outage on campus brought out the creative side of AC students:

"During an interim blackout, the girls in Stevens Hall were so distraught that they could not watch their favorite soap opera that they acted it out instead."

As the "Saturday Night Fever" craze swept the nation, a local hangout tried to capitalize by placing the following ad:

"The Pub, in downtown Adrian, is now the place to go dancing and partying to disco music on a lighted dance floor."
