1930s
Glenn Shaffer '36 celebrated his 90th birthday on July 15. He
and his wife, Frances Heckert Shaffer '38, live in Phoenix, Ariz.
1940s
Earl Dickey '40 and his wife, Juanita,
celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary Dec. 26. They live in the Carbondale, Ill., area, close to their
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Earl is in his
64th year as a minister of the United Methodist Church.
1960s
Remember
the "All College Sing?" (Every spring,
men and women on campus represented their organizations by competing
in choirs and quartets.) Four alumnae met in April in Burr Oak,
Mich., to do just that.
In 1963, the winning women's quartet was from the Alpha Delta
Chi women's service organization, and consisted of Joyce Showerman
'63, Kathy Love Cary '65, Jean Bird Spike '63,
and Janet Bird DeVriendt '66. These quartet members have
corresponded over the years, but this was their first opportunity
in 39 years for all four to sing together. After some practicing,
they made a digital recording for a CD as a personal souvenir
of the day. Though no longer interested in musical competition,
the four had such a wonderful day that they plan to make it an
annual event.
Paul '60 and Dona Jean (Jody)
Stiner Frederick '61 moved to the London, England, area in August,
where Paul was asked to serve the Methodist Church of Great Britain
as a full-time member of the Richmond Hounslow Circuit staff for
12 months. Their address is 15 Lampton Park

TW3 4HS. Jody retired from teaching in June 2001, but hopes to
do some substitute teaching while in England. For 15 years, she
had been a special education teacher consultant with Waverly Community
Schools in Lansing. Paul retired from
full-time ministry in June 2000. He continued part-time, plus
became a motor coach operator for Dean Trailways of Michigan. Jody has volunteered
to be head tour guide for all who visit them in England.
Charles Cox '62 has moved to California, where he serves
as vice chair for research in the Division of Restorative Dentistry
at UCLA.
Bill Mason '65 completed his 37th year of teaching and coaching
at West Bloomfield High School. His wife, Sally
Rehse Mason '64, retired in October to become a full-time
grandmother.
The Methodist
Federation for Social Action honored the Rev. Edwin A. Rowe
'66 with the Jesse and Annamary DeWitt Award this year. The
award is given for outstanding work in peace and justice ministry.
Rowe was honored for his lifetime of activist work to achieve
social and economic justice. He is pastor of Central United Methodist Church in Detroit.
The National
High School Athletic Coaches Association named Larry Tuttle
'66 the coach of the year, as did the Michigan High School
Baseball Coaches Association. Tuttle led the Blissfield High School baseball team to
a state record sixth state championship this year. It was Tuttle's
35th season as coach. With a career record of 808-235-2, he ranks
second in career coaching victories in Michigan.
1980s
R Cole Bouck '84 has been promoted to
administrative assistant for the regional prison administrator
in Region III, with the Michigan Department of Corrections in
Jackson. Cole previously
served in a similar capacity for a warden's office at one of the
region's 15 correctional facilities. He joined the department
as a corrections officer in 1985.
Michele Mason Lemon '85
accepted
a position as accounts receivable manager with The Tire Rack,
known as America's leading distributor
of high performance tires, suspensions and brake products, in
South Bend, Ind. Michele previously
spent 16 years at Honeywell Aircraft Landing Systems, most recently
as a senior accountant. She also completed her fifth year as a
Junior Achievement volunteer, teaching a business and economics
curriculum at Stark Elementary School

Denee Hartung '85 and two fellow teachers
at Garfield Elementary School in Adrian recently received
a $100 honorarium from the Lenawee Council for the Visual Arts
for incorporating the arts with other classroom lessons. They
used a rain forest theme to decorate their fourth- and fifth-grade
classrooms.
Deanna Hignite Richeson
'84 is the president
of STRIVE Atlanta, Train for Change,
Inc. She spent 15 years with NOVA Information Systems Operations Center in Knoxville, Tenn., where she was named
the first female vice president of risk management. Having left
corporate America, Deanna now spends
her time helping the disadvantaged obtain job training, employment
and follow-up services. STRIVE was recently featured on "60 Minutes,"
and has 22 affiliate offices in 21 cities.
BIRTHS
Nancy Leppert Kujda '86 and husband Mike
announce the birth of Gabriel Michael, born Jan. 31. He joins
sister Meredith, 3. Nancy works part-time as
a freelance interior designer, and Mike is a project manager for
Trident Tooling Systems in Toledo. The Kujda family
lives in Lambertville.
Brian Jones '88 is employed by Sandusky
Community Schools in Sandusky as the middle school
counselor. In May, he was elected Junior High/Middle School Representative
to the Governing Board of the Michigan School Counselor Association
for the 2002-04 school years. His wife, Ann Gulliver Jones
'89, recently completed a three-year term on the Sandusky
Board of Education. The Jones' live in Sandusky, and have three children,
Elaina, 8, Krissa, 5, and Benjamin, 2.
Ronda Thornton Nicholson
'88 and her husband, Andrew, announce the birth of Britney
Sue, born June 11, 2001. She joins brother Brandon, 4. Ronda is a vice
president and manager of consumer and commercial loan operations
at Hibernia National Bank in New Orleans. Andrew is a deputy with the Orleans
Parish Sheriff's Office. The Nicholson family lives in Kenner, La.
Lisa Young Roberts '88
and
her husband, Jeff, announce the birth of Emily Elizabeth, born
June 25. She joins brother Jared Allen, 4. Lisa is a stay-at-home
mom; the Roberts family lives in Elmwood, Ill.
1990s
Andrew Jackson '92 completed his 10th year
teaching English at Allen Park High School in Allen Park. He received a master's
degree in educational leadership from Wayne State University in 1997 and married
Teresa Brooks, a Spanish teacher at Livonia Stevenson High School, on Aug. 11, 2001. Kevin Phillips
'92 served as the best man at the ceremony in Plymouth. The Jacksons live in Canton, and can be reached

Tim Smith '93 recently completed
a baseball tour-six stadiums in seven days. He began his journey
in Pittsburgh on June 9, then continued
to Cleveland, Detroit, and Comiskey Park for the White Sox.
He finished the trip at Wrigley Field (Cubs) for an afternoon
game and a night game in Milwaukee. Tim said he traveled
about 2,250 miles in seven days.
Christina White '93 has launched a design,
prepress and publishing company. She specializes in first or second
time authors and invites those looking for a small, local company

Eric Metz '95 graduated from Osteopathic Medical School in May, and is currently
training through Michigan State University College of Osteopathic
Medicine at Garden City Hospital. Eric will complete
his internship in June, and will then enter a residency program.
Andy Spohn '95, student financial services
associate, received his master's degree in human resource development
from Siena Heights University this spring.
Jonathan Hamer '98 graduated this spring
from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago with a doctor of
optometry degree. He plans to join a Lenscrafters practice in
Aiken, S.C.
Charlie Butz '99, currently an assistant superintendent
at Caves Valley Golf Course in Owings Mills, Md., has accepted a similar
position at Inverness Golf Course in Toledo.
Paula Habib '99 was recently appointed
to the Ohio State University board of trustees.
She is a second-year medical student at OSU.

Katherine Meeker Cornelius
'93 and her husband, Tom, announce the birth of Parry Elise,
born April 11. She joins sister Abigail Elizabeth, 6, and brother
Charlton Thomas, 2. Proud aunt is Jennifer Meeker Clifton '96.
The Cornelius family lives in Adrian, where Katherine
is a stay-at-home mom.
Don Lipinski '94 and his wife, Teresa,
announce the birth of their first child, Alyssa, born Jan. 14.
The Lipinski family lives in Southgate, and Don is a teacher
and coach with the Wyandotte Public Schools.

Pelletier '94 announce the birth of Emma Hope, born Jan. 3.
Emma joins brother Benjamin, 3. Todd has been a Michigan State
Trooper for seven years, and Amy is in her sixth year of teaching
at Eastern Michigan University. The Pelletier family
lives in Trenton.

Garza '95 announce the birth of their son, Benjamin Samuel,
born Nov.
28, 2001. He is a surviving triplet.
His baptism was attended by many AC alumni. Present were godfather

Overmyer '94 announce the birth of Gretta Elizabeth, born
Oct. 10. Jay is employed at the University of Georgia as agricultural research
coordinator, and is completing his Ph.D. in environmental toxicology.
Amanda is a stay-at-home mom. The Overmyer family lives in Athens, Ga.
Andy '97 and Erin McGinnity
Kostos '97 announce the birth of Kennedy Laurel, born Oct. 9, 2001. Andy is a recreation
coordinator at a juvenile detention center, and Erin is training for her
nursing home administrator's license for the state of Ohio. They live in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
Charity Anderson Stein
'97 and her husband, Michael, announce the birth of Paxton
Reed, born April 8. He joins brother Sage Anderson Stein, 2. Charity
is a stay-at-home mom. The Steins live in Orange County, Calif., and would enjoy

Kimberly Lewis '93 and Jerry Lindeen
were married May 4 in Minneapolis, Minn. The bride's parents
are Robert '65 and Michele Collins Lewis '65. Serving
as a bridesmaid was Kimberly and Michele's Alpha Phi sister, Catherine
Ramsdell '92. Kimberly is a bank officer of Bremer Bank. The
couple lives in Minneapolis.
Michelle Lippincott '93
and Fred Dunford were
married May
12, 2001, at Ward Evangelical
Presbyterian Church in Northville. Michelle is a medical technologist
in the blood bank at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. Serving as bridesmaids
were Robyn Flowers Dragoo '93 and Stacy Pasch '93.
Amy Newman Paradine '92 was a guest. Michelle and Fred
live in Canton.
Sarah Pridgeon '94 and Scott Woodruff were
married Dec. 22, in Grand Rapids. Sarah is the director
of sales for the Grand Rapids Griffins hockey team. Guests included

Emily Graske '96 married Todd Boyce on
May 26, 2001, in Grand Haven.
Emily graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary in May, with
a master of divinity degree. Todd and Emily serve as co-pastors
of Old Springfield Presbyterian Church. In attendance at the wedding
were Susan Kobylarz '95, Brendon Smith '97, Michael
Sawicki '97, Scott Lebsack '97 and his wife, Monica,
and David Goudie '96.
2000s
Damon Johnson '01 is living in Roseville, where he is employed
as a system manager with Jockey International.
WEDDINGS
Julie Rutledge '01 and Kenneth Wells
were married June 22 in Palmyra. Julie taught in
Waldron during the last school year, and then worked for Sears,
Roebuck & Company. The couple plans to live wherever Kenneth
is stationed with the Navy.
Pamela Walter '02 and Trevor Edwards
were married May 11 in the Adrian College Chapel. Pamela is the
program director at Bally Total Fitness. The couple lives in Adrian.
Deaths
F. Evelyn Beck '30, of Adrian, died May 27. Evelyn
taught history and English at Romulus High School before obtaining
a master's degree in nursing education and administration. She
worked at several hospitals, retiring from Harper Hospital in Detroit in 1972. At Evelyn's
request, memorial contributions may be made to the F. Evelyn Beck
Scholarship Fund at Adrian College, or the First United
Methodist Church of Adrian.
Elma Remmele Green '32, of Adrian, died May 24. Survivors
include her son, a sister, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild.
Dorothy Osborn Mayer
'33,
of Manassas, Va., died June 4. Survivors
include one daughter, Glendora Gossman, two sons, Osborn "Ozzie"
Mayer '65 and Robert Mayer, four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Charles Boyse '34, a former board member
of the AC Alumni Association, died April 12. He was in education
for 38 years and spent the majority of his time with the Hillsdale
School System. Charles was inducted into the AC Hall of Fame in
1980. Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Boyse Brown '65,
two sons, Dale and Doug Boyse '63, and a brother, Harold
Boyse '45.
G. Miriam Custis Cairns '34,
of Harrison, died March 30. A
former president of Tri Delta Sorority, she taught in the Highlands School District and at Amity High School in Ohio. Miriam is survived
by a daughter, Cathy Cairns. Miriam's husband, Robert Cairns '36,
preceded her in death.
C. Lewis Bragg '40, owner and operator
of Var-I-Products, a machine and tool shop, died March 31. He
was preceded in death by his wife, L. Charlene Norman Bragg
'37. Survivors include his five children, Lewis Bragg, Robert
Bragg '67, Patricia Bragg, Darlene Fischel and Marlene Florkowski,
six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Lee Allshouse Jr. '46, of Adrian, died May 19. Lee
worked as a purchasing agent for American Chain and Cable for
22 years, retiring in 1986. For the past several years he assisted
with funerals and visitations at the Braun Everiss Wagley Funeral
Home. Lee is survived by one daughter, one son, seven grandchildren,
a sister and a brother.
Louis Schwartz '46, of Adrian, died May 17. Louis
was a funeral director at the Anderson Funeral Home in Adrian, and had earned his
Fifty Year License Award from the Michigan Funeral Director's
Association in 1998. Louis is survived by his wife, Marcella,
a son, three daughters, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren
and one sister.
O. Lorraine McAfee Cappels '48, retired biochemist
and resident of Cupertino, Calif., died July 13. Survivors
include a son, Tom.
Betty Haines Wiley '50,
retired x-ray technician of Ann Arbor, died May 28. Surviving are her
husband, Richard Wiley '50, two sons, three brothers and
a sister.
Barbara Arrand Devey
'51, of Wittenberg, Wis., died May 15. In
addition to being a Christian educator in American Baptist Churches
where her husband was minister, Barbara was also a social worker
and teacher. She retired from River Bluff Nursing Home, Rockford, Ill., in 1993. Barbara
was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Devey '51.
She is survived by four children, nine grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
Kenneth Stepp '51, of Adrian, died July 11. A
member of the SAE fraternity, Kenneth was noted for his football
and track career. He was on the AC Alumni Board Association, where
he served as president. In October 2001, he and his wife of 51
years, Ioan Young Stepp, became the first couple inducted in the
AC Athletic Hall of Fame. Kenneth was employed as a cost accountant
in laboratory furniture at Kewanee for 19 years, before leaving
to teach industrial arts at Sand Creek School. Surviving besides
his wife are two daughters, Nancy Schoensee and Susan Frauenkron,
one son, Steven, three brothers, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
C. Earl Eden Jr. '56, of Adrian, died June 11. Earl
served the Detroit Conference at Springville United Methodist Church from 1993-1999, and
Morenci United Methodist Church from 2000-2001. He
is survived by his wife, Patricia, one son and a granddaughter.
Harold Clements '62, of Jerome, died
May 26. For the past 18 years, Harold had served as the postmaster
of the Jerome Post Office. He is survived by his wife, Betty,
three sons, a brother, five sisters, seven grandchildren and one
step-grandchild.
Donald Fackler '72
died April 16. Don lived in Mason for 30 years with his wife,
Patricia Edgington Fackler '72. Don taught school
in Leslie for 30 years and coached girls and boys basketball
in Leslie and Mason. He also volunteered his time as a coach for
the Capitol City Express Girls AAU team that won many Michigan championships. Surviving
with his wife are one son, Brad, and one daughter, Wendy. While
at AC, Don played basketball and was a member of Theta Chi.
Marcia L. Clements '72
died July 25. She was a kindergarten and first-grade teacher for
25 years. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma and Kappa Delta
Pi. She is survived by her husband, Franklin Clements '72,
her father and his wife, one daughter and son-in-law, and one
granddaughter.
Chris Christensen '73, special education
teacher at Kearsley High School in Flint, died June 14. He
was the Big Nine Coach of the Year in 2001, and had coached the
past 28 seasons of hockey at Kearsley, and also coached the boys
and girls tennis programs. Surviving are his wife, Cathy, and
two sons, Christian IV and Curtis.
Edward Gordon '83, a chemical operator
at Anderson Development, died April 11. He is survived by his
mother, Virginia Gordon of Adrian, a sister, and two brothers.
Burton Ward '86, an engineer at the Tecumseh Products Company since 1988,
died April 29. He is survived by his mother, Virginia Smith, of
Adrian, two brothers and two sisters.
Richard Pokriefka '84 died Aug 22. He was
the director of infectious disease and hospital epidemiology for
St. John Detroit Riverview Hospital and St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren. He was also on staff
at Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Mt. Clemens General Hospital and St. Mary Mercy
Hospital in Livonia.
He is survived by his wife, Beth; six children; one brother; one
sister; his parents, and his grandparents.
Michelle Kruse '88 died July 2. She
was employed at Whirlpool and was involved with several charities.
Survivors include her parents, a brother and a sister, Heidi
Kruse Roffman '90. Memorials may be made to the Michelle Kruse
Memorial Fund at St. Joseph (Mich.) High School.
Friends
Joe Stroud, retired editor and
senior vice president of the Detroit Free Press, died May 9 at
age 65. Stroud received an honorary doctor of laws degree from
Adrian College in 1995.
Mildred Benson died May 28 at age
96.The author and Toledo Blade journalist wrote 23 of the 30 original
Nancy Drew mysteries. Adrian College granted her an honorary
doctor of letters degree in 1999.
