COACH
CARTER TO VISIT ADRIAN COLLEGE
posted 2/9/06
Coach
Ken Carter is scheduled to speak at noon on Feb. 20
in Dawson Auditorium and will be available for autographs
at 1:15 p.m. in Caine Student Center.
Carter’s story was the basis
of the 2005 film “Coach Carter” starring
Samuel L. Jackson. The movie was based on Ken Carter’s
1999 news breaking lockout of the undefeated Richmond
High School (Richmond, Cal.) boys basketball team because
15 of his 45 players didn’t live up to their academic
contracts. Carter not only closed the Richmond High
School gym, but he banned all basketball-related activities
and was prepared to cancel the program for the entire
season.
He is best known for his stance on
the importance of concrete athletic programs and accompanying
these programs with solid grades.
He is being brought to Adrian College
as part of the Black History Month program, and to meet
with current and prospective students. Coach Carter
will speak with athletic recruits on Sunday and meet
with students Monday morning for breakfast. The public
is welcome to attend the speech and autograph session
at no cost.
Dawson Auditorium is located
off of Charles Street on the Adrian College campus.
Caine Student Center is located off Williams Street.
