History
At the outbreak of the Civil War in early 1861, the trustees of Adrian College offered the use of campus buildings and grounds to the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry for training. This became know as Camp Williams. The city of Adrian donated money to build a mess and dining hall. By early June, ten companies of the Fourth had arrived and started their training. The 1025 troops came from Adrian, Ann Arbor, Dexter, Jonesville, Hudson, Sturgis, Monroe, Hillsdale, Tecumseh, and Trenton. On June 21st, nearly 30,000 people came to town to see the Fourth depart for Washington. The ladies of Adrian presented Colonel Dwight Woodbury with the regimental flag. Sewn onto the flag was "The Ladies of Adrian to the Fourth regiment Defend it."

ADRIAN COLLEGE TO HOST CAMP WILLIAMS RE-CREATION posted 3/28/03

The 4th Michigan Company G will re-create Camp Williams from the Civil War on the Adrian College campus April 11-13. They will also dedicate a State of Michigan Historical Marker for the 4th Michigan and Camp Williams on site.

Events scheduled for the weekend include a period ball at 7:30 p.m. Friday, a period church service 10 a.m. Sunday, a parade at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, and the marker dedication and flag presentation at 2 p.m. on Sunday. All events are free and open to the public. Several state and local politicians will be in attendance at the marker dedication and flag presentation.

The dedication ceremony is meant to commemorate Adrian College's Civil War history and the sacrifice of the 4th Michigan. In 1861, Asa Mahan offered the use of North Hall and the Adrian College campus to the 4th Michigan. In June of that year, the soldiers went on active duty in the Civil War.

The 4th Michigan Company G is a non-profit organization comprised of residents of Lenawee County that are dedicated to preserving and teaching the history of the 4th Michigan and the Civil War. They have raised over $2,000 to purchase a state historical marker to be placed in front of North Hall.
