Organization gets new digs in North Hall
Cambios Inc. has found a new home
at Adrian College. The organization, which promotes
diversity in Lenawee County, will now be located in
North Hall on the Adrian College campus.
Cambios will have an office to use,
in addition to having access to College resources, such
as the College phone system, the library, and photocopiers.
The College will also host the organization’s
website, and may offer guidance with grant writing.
Having Cambios on campus will allow
a closer partnership with the College. Cambios will
provide work-study jobs, volunteer opportunities, and
access to multicultural books. In addition, collaborations
with Adrian classes will now be even easier than before.
“The aims of Cambios are consistent
with the aims of Adrian College,” said Stanley
Caine, Adrian president. “They have an educational
mission, seeking to assist teachers and students in
the county, and are concerned with diversity.”
While Cambios and Adrian College are
and will remain separate entities, there are several
connections between the two. Adrian professors Maher
Mualla and Don Cellini are both on the Cambios board
of directors. In addition, professors in both the sociology
and teacher education departments have worked with Cambios,
and these departments will now be located in the same
building as Cambios.
This arrangement comes free of charge
to Cambios. The partnership agreement will be reviewed
by both sides on an annual basis. The agreement is similar
to the one with the Adrian Symphony Orchestra, which
is also located on campus.
Cambios (www.cambios.org)
does a variety of things in the community, including
heading up a multicultural reading program in area schools.
Thanks to a grant, the organization now has its first
half-time director – which makes having a new
permanent headquarters especially timely.
The arrangement was made public
at a Nov. 17 dinner in conjunction with Cambios' guest
speaker, Evelyn
Coleman.
