PRESIDENT CAINE AWARDED HONORARY DOCTORATE posted 7/3/02
Returns to town where his father was a college president

Adrian College President Stanley P. Caine served as commencement speaker and was awarded an honorary doctorate at the May 25 commencement ceremony of MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill.

Caine was awarded a Doctor of Letters degree. His speech was titled, "First Things."

Caine earned a bachelor's degree from Macalester College (Minn.), and a master's degree and doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He taught history at Lindenwood College (Mo.), DePauw University (Ind.), and Hanover College (Ind.)-where he was also vice president of academic affairs-before he accepted the presidency at Adrian College in 1989.

MacMurray noted Caine's involvement as director and president of the National Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities of the United Methodist Church, and his service to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics as a Division III president and board member.

The college also noted that Caine, a 1958 graduate of the area's Jacksonville High School, earned five varsity letters in football and tennis, received state and national recognition in football, and was inducted to the JHS Hall of Fame. The citation reads that he "must be the only former JHS linebacker who is now a college president." It also states that he was once a tennis professional and an active tournament player.

Stanley Caine's father, L. Vernon Caine, was president of Illinois College in Jacksonville from 1956 to 1973.
MacMurray College is a liberal arts institution an hour west of Springfield.

Hanover College awarded Stanley Caine an honorary doctorate in May 2000.
