TRUSTEES RENAME STUDENT CENTER AFTER RETIRING PRESIDENT posted 4/18/05
Ridge Student Center will now be Caine Student Center

At a celebration dinner for Stanley P. Caine on Saturday night, people from far and wide recognized the impact that the retiring president of Adrian College has had on the College, and on higher education as a whole.

But what topped the evening off was the announcement that Gary Valade, chair of the Adrian College Board of Trustees, saved for near the end: the newly-remodeled Ridge Student Center will now be called the Stanley P. Caine Student Center.

The building, which was home to Adrian College athletics until 1990 and was originally called Ridge Gymnasium, has been transformed into a fully-modern, 24-hour student center. This project caps off a series of important improvements to campus during Caine’s tenure, and is in keeping with the emphasis he has always placed on students.

During his announcement, Valade explained that a representative of the Ridge family has been contacted about the name change, and is very supportive. The original gymnasium, for which construction began in 1929, was finally completed in the 1950s thanks to the generosity of Indiana industrialist and College trustee Everett Ridge, class of 1923, and his wife Julia Craig Ridge, class of 1922. The center court area of the building will now be formally named after the family, and their important role in the building’s history will be duly indicated.

Caine, who will retire June 30, has been president of Adrian College for 16 years.
“Stan Caine has truly made a difference here at Adrian College: in our mission and values, in our success as an educational community, and in the lives of each of us,” Valade said in an earlier statement.
