“Be True To Yourself, Dream Big Dreams” posted 5/3/11
Adrian College celebrates commencement; Carol Van Andel gives inspiring speech on the keys to leadership and success.

ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College is pleased to announce that on Sunday May 1, 2011, 251 graduates strolled across the stage to receive their diplomas.

In a new tradition, commencement was held on the mall at the center of campus before 3,000 attendees. Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Agnes Caldwell introduced the 2011 commencement speaker, Carol Van Andel.

“When I see the bright faces before and assembled here, I know that a very positive future in Michigan is in store.” Van Andel began. “You are all poised to do great things wherever your journey may lead you.”

Van Andel discussed the unique traditions on campus, and the ways in which opportunity evolves into potential. She reminded each graduate to be honest with themselves and remember humanity and the greater good in the world. She encouraged each student to start in their own communities.

Van Andel told the class of 2011 that although she has held many roles: as both a mother and as the Executive Director of the David and Carol Van Andel Foundation, her journey isn’t done. She went on to encourage each student to be passionate about the career they will choose adding that “a voice would remind them to use their gifts”.

“Listen carefully,” said Van Andel. “Use that voice to guide you. Be true to yourself and you are on your way to becoming a leader.”

She went on to say that while “you may not become president, or hold some high authority position” you will have integrity and the respect of those around you, especially in giving back to the community.

“We are (all) different. So while you find yourself, remember that every truly successful person serves others.”

Van Andel went on to discuss the values of great leaders and quoted several innovative leaders.

“Leaders are not always the center of attention- or at the head of the crowd. They are the ones pushing the crowd.”

Van Andel reflected on her mentor, her father in-law, Jay Van Andel, and of his lasting legacy to help others. She noted that in creating the Van Andel Research Institute and the beginning of the medical mile in Grand Rapids he “didn’t listen to the norm” and instead followed his heart and “did what he was passionate about”.

“Leaders are not always the ones with the bull horns or the microphones,” she said. “They are the ones quietly backstage. Real leaders are invariably involved in the work of serving others.”

Van Andel concluded by reminding graduates of the value of occasionally going against the grain.

“Dream big dreams, and develop your gifts to benefit you, your community, and the world at large. Don’t be afraid to challenge conventional thinking,” Van Andel instructed. “Dare to aspire to be more than you are. The world needs the best you have to offer.”

Preceding her address, Van Andel was presented with an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.

Charles F. Baer, retired president of Becton Dickinson & Co. and Harold D. Craft, president of Craft-Barresi Consultants, Ltd, were also recognized for their contributions to the college community. They were each awarded the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.

The College congratulates all of its 2011 spring graduates and wishes them success in all future endeavors.
